9 month old chipped his front tooth

Hey ladies ,

We woke up this morning and realised our little boy has chipped his front tooth. I've booked the dentist but it's in 2 weeks time. I feel awful. I know he's going to have this now until his teeth grow in but I feel so guilty. I'm always checking to make sure he's okay so why didn't I see this? He hasn't complained or anything. He also grinds his teeth quite a bit and also chews everything in sight.

Am I bad a mother ? I feel like one. Also is it quite common for little ones to chip their teeth ?

Of course you’re not a bad mother. Children have accidents. There’s no way to avoid them completely. My 9 month old son is always knocking his face against the floor/other objects while trying to crawl. Maybe that’s how he did it? I would keep an eye on him in case he also hit his head when it happened as well though. Is he behaving normally?

He's constantly chewing things and he grinds his teeth a lot. He seems absolutely fine. He's eating and drinking and the same old cheeky self.

I feel awful , I've actually cried. I'm a first time mum so I feel guilty about everything. He's absolutely fine though

Shall I just keep an eye? It doesn't seem like it's bothering him

My 11 yr old chipped a front tooth at about the same age. He then chipped even more off the same tooth about 6 months later. It was never a problem to him and the tooth lasted until it fell out naturally. He has not chipped any teeth since. I think the dentist might have filed it for a few seconds the next time we were in for a check up just to make it a little less sharp, but I might be mis-remembering that bit.

I had this - eldest chipped his tooth when 2 and I felt awful and also cried. He’s five now and the sharp bit now has softer edges so can’t tell as much. Hope you are okay

I'm glad his tooth is okay now. I just feel so guilty. The minute I saw it , I did ring the dentist and they didn't seem that concerned. I'm just a stress head so that doesn't help.

I think I was the same and phoned up too, but they didn’t want to know as he wasn’t 2 years old yet. They did have a quick look next time I was in for a check up though.

I told them about it and they asked to see him and I'm grateful in a way to put my mind at ease.

I was almost sad when the baby tooth fell out and a whole tooth grew in. I’d grown so used to the chip!

scaredofff · 26/03/2024 16:14

Exactly the same happened to me with ds at 9mo. He's 2 and a half now
I also went straight to the dentist and they put the fear of life into me talking about taking it out and it going black etc!! As if I wasn't feeling as shit as possible before I went in. My poor baby, his beautiful smile - I was really upset, still am tbh

He has chipped it a bit more since but I didn't notice until the others around it grew. He is a mouther so it is tough keeping him from putting things in his mouth
It hasn't turned black (phew!!) and hasn't been taken out (double phew!!) but im fearful at an app they'll bring it up again and I'll have a meltdown

Keep on with brushing good and if it's not causing him any pain hopefully it'll be ok!

Thankfully they seemed okay on the phone but hopefully the actual dentist is just as nice. It's family members that aren't helping saying "why weren't you watching him" etc. It's literally just a chip , there's no discolour and he doesn't seem in any pain. He's currently sat in his ball pit kicking and screaming

Can I ask how was your child after having it filed down.? I don't want him to be in pain

Absolutely fine. I think the dentist only did it for a second or two until he noticed what was going on and then stopped, and that was enough. No crying, nothing.

Thank you, just a bit anxious about it
