Low-ish blood sugar toddler?

Has anyone had to do blood sugar monitoring on a kiddo for low-ish blood sugar?

context: toddler (2.5) went into A&E after a tummy bug as she was b. hypoglycaemic and needed some time on a drip. GP wanted me to monitor her blood sugar now she’s not got a tummy bug.

I’ve read the normal range is 4 - 7. My toddler is skirting around 3.6 lowest and sometimes getting up to 4.2. She did have one reading of 5….after an afternoon of frankly tudor banquet level toddler feasting 😂

I’m sure the conclusion of this will be she just has lower end of normal blood sugars so when she gets poorly we need to get on it with keeping blood sugars up. But wondering if anyone else has had something similar? Or has had to monitor for low blood sugar? Thank you!!

Bump / update….
any experiences of toddler being referred to endocrinology??

ANP listened to my report of toddler’s blood sugar readings (10 across 2 days - some of them were slightly below 4, and she had one slightly above 7 after eating some pom bears - so mostly low but once a bit high) so we’ll get another GP appt. to discuss. ANP said GP might refer to endocrinology. I’m a bit flummoxed about what low blood sugar could indicate? Or what endocrinology might look for - has anyone any experience of something similar?

i know it’s best to try not to think about it, but I was hoping the Dr would just say it’s all fine’ but they haven’t yet so I’m ruminating on it.

My child has hyper insulinism and the threshold is below 3.5 if you have hyperinsulinism. So 3.6 is considered fine to leave hospital etc. If you don’t have hyperinsulinism the threshold is lower(2 I think).

Thanks @TakeMe2Insanity - when you say ‘threshold’ is that the threshold to be considered hypoglycaemic?

I’m waiting on a call back from GP this week - hoping to chat through with a HVP as I’m properly bamboozled.

A hypo for a child with hyperinsulinism is below 3.5.

For a child without hyperinsulinism a hypo is below 2.

The criteria is different because a child with hyperinsulinism can crash faster than a normal child.

@splendidsqueak7 How are you getting on with this? I have just found out my 21 month old has Ketotic hypoglycemia and we are starting investigations to see if there is an underlying issue

@HoneyPea we’ve been warned that after hyper insulinism recovery this is normal for the children. Are you being seen by an endocrine team?

HoneyPea · 11/06/2025 20:01

@TakeMe2InsanityWe have only had one appointment with a pediatric consultant. They are doing blood tests as he is small for his age and is struggling to put on weight. He did say about possibly being referred to Birmingham
