Cafe au lait birthmarks

Does anyone else's LO have more than one cafe au lait birthmark, or just have some random tan pigment marks on their skin? My son was born with one brown birthmark and after a summer holiday last year I noticed another on his arm. He also has a bit of hyperpigmentation over his spine. He is almost 5 and his doctor isn't worried, but I tend to get quite anxious over these things. Can anyone chime in with a similar experience?

@raffathegaffa i was told cafe au laits are extremely common in children who have parents with different skin colours. I remember reading about it during my panic google session. I also read a study where they study children with irregular cafe au laits and the majority of them didn’t have NF. I need to take my own advice however because I am still worried!

There is also a condition called legius syndrome which can be mistaken for NF1. Having been through many hospital appointments with the geneticist this is what the blood test found, not NF1 (many cafe au lait birthmarks were flagged at an unrelated doctor appointment).

My son has some, they appeared when he was a baby. The main one is on his leg and large. I got into a panic about NF but HV wasn’t worried and he’s now 15 and all fine x

My 3 year old has NF1. I didn't notice any CALs at birth but by 2 weeks old, 2 had appeared and then every week or so another appeared for the first few weeks of her life.

I had a very difficult time getting a diagnosis. Our GP just said 'well you know more about this than me' and sent me away. I finally managed to get bloods done when she went for heart surgery as a baby (unrelated condition)

I wouldn't worry too much if it's just a couple. With NF they pop up all the time and you'd see freckling in the groin and armpit area.

NF1 Café au lait macules (CAL) appear mostly in the first year of life and are unrelated to sun exposure. CAL are extremely common and even more so in children who are very fair with red or strawberry blond hair.

I wouldn't worry about Nf1.
