Baby reflux and Omeprazole

My 9 week old breastfed baby has always brought up quite a bit of milk but in the last week it's become epic - multiple spectacular fountains every time he's awake and a soaked sheet whenever he's laid down. I was thinking that the worsening might be a response to the rotavirus vaccine that he had a week ago (we've had more poonamis too), but the GP saw one of his fountains today and prescribed Omeprazole.

I'm really keen to help my little one with the constant sick but slightly concerned to put him on the medication when he generally seems like a "happy chucker'. He's not upset when sick, although he does cry when he has powerful wind or needs to poo. He will sleep soundly when being held but won't sleep if put on his back in the cot as he instantly starts rolling about like he's uncomfy.

I've not tried excluding cows milk yet as we tried that with my oldest son and it didnt help and his symptoms just naturally eased over time, so i was hopeful that that would be the case this time, but that was before the sick episodes became so constant!

I just wondered if anyone had experienced this too with their baby and how did you find omeprazole if they tried it? Thanks!

My daughter has reflux and many food allergies which impacts her reflux but she has it on its own too.

When you removed dairy, did you also remove soya?

If they are gaining weight and happy with reflux and you are happy you don't have to medicated the reflux. One of my friends daughters frequently projectile vomited but she gained weight very well and was happy. She got very good at washing the sofa covers! This all stopped around 6 months.

My daughter was a mix of a happy spitter and a very unhappy silent refluxer. She started on omperazole at 8 weeks and I went dairy and soya free at 17 weeks. She has particularly stubborn reflux and needs high dose omperazole with a thickener and domperidone to manage it. She still is on the combination at 3 which is very unusual. We had very little benefit from the omperazole until she was put on the highest dose at 17 weeks and this turned her into just a happy spitter until about 6 months when she stopped being sick. Since then she has had periods where her silent reflux is well controlled by medication and periods where it is but I reiterate she has particularly difficult reflux to manage and is under 2 paediatricians for it!

I think it is worth giving the omperazole ago and if you didn't remove soya as well as dairy maybe explore that route too. The omperazole might make things worse for the first couple of weeks as the body tries to fight the lowering of the acid production by increasing acid production so some times it takes some patience.
