Hi everyone

DD (2h has been generally unwell for a while and had a fever for a week. We were in A&E on Monday and they did bloods. Initially said they’re all clear and sent us home saying it’s viral. Then they called back and said they’d realised her ALP (a liver test) is raised and needs repeating in 3 weeks. We’re going back to the hospital to repeat them.

im so worried! The phone call took me by surprise so I didn’t get chance to ask much. They just said it could be raised due to infection or potentially growth spurt

anyone with a similar experience??

thanks

Hi,

Viral infections can cause raised liver enzymes in adults and children. This is common. They want to repeat in 3 weeks to give your DD a chance to fight off the infection first and then just double check that liver enzyme has returned back to normal or at least dramatically dropped. If after the 2nd blood test they are still unhappy with the results or if your DD is still sick they will investigate further.

This has happened to my son recently, he was admitted to hospital for 4 days with a virus and dehydration, his bloods found 2 very high liver enzymes, they tested every day he was an in patient via a cannula and then asked us to return 10 days later as outpatient to have another blood test to keep an eye these figures were dropping.

Thank you so much that’s really reassuring!

Wondering if anyone had any knowledge of a high ALP my 22 month olds was 2950! This was done 8 months ago and I only just found out about it! Should I be concerned, her liver function was fine so this is bone. She has delayed development walking crawling etc. could this be linked too? Should I be concerned. Waiting for bone profile, repeat liver function, phosphate and vit d bloods

KC1234 · 21/03/2024 11:38

Oh no! How come you weren’t informed of that sooner??
i really don’t know a lot about it but Google tellls me a high ALP can be to do with the liver or the bones, but also could be due to viral illness or even a growth spurt.
are they doing all those bloods now based on the high ALP?

She was having genetic testing and they just checked everything else too. They told me genetics fine but did not say others were not. I then attended a consultant appt with little one to be told it was high! Not how high had to chase this myself and they asked if she had a fracture at time of bloods which she did not.
just a joke to not tell me! And leave her this long. I’ve been given no blood form! Waiting for it to be sent out. Just concerning that it could be serious

Hello,

I have a similar issue. Child has levels of ALP - over 8000. Was everything ok after getting tested?

Icannoteven · 24/03/2025 19:57

My daughter had raised ALP when she was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease. We were told that lots of viruses cause raised ALP/stress to the liver as the body releases a lot of iron when you have a virus that can be hard for the liver to process.

There is no specific test for Kawasaki’s. It is diagnosed on a cluster of symptoms, the main ones being a high temperature for five or more days, red eyes or tongue, swollen lymph nodes, altered mental states (in my daughters case this looked like ‘spaciness’ and moodiness, joint pain and red hands and feet (sometimes peeling hands feet and/or tongue). Helpful blood test is CRP/inflammatory markers (which I’m assuming has been done as it is a pretty common test they do to rule out whether something is a virus or something more serious).

Not sure what age your child is but Kawasakis peaks at age 2 and usually only affects under 5’s. It needs treatment within 10 days.
