Accommodative esotropia - options for 12 year old?

Hi all, my 12 year old has been wearing glasses since they were 18 months old for accommodative esotropia (squint) and bi-focals since 4 years old. I understand surgery is not an option because their esotropia is accommodative. Since teen years are around the corner, I’m keen to know if there are any alternative options to bi-focals? Our optician said contact lenses are not likely an option because prescription too complicated, but I’m wondering if anyone has any experience or insights on this, (optician said to do some research) or ‘D’ shape bifocals, or Botox (assuming not because accommodative?) Prescription is right eye distance +2.25 near +2.00 left eye distance +1.75 near +2.00, and there’s an astigmatism. Thanks.

She could try RGP bifocal contact lenses, which will also correct the astigmatism (unless it's lenticular). They do take some getting used to, so maybe wait until she starts complaining about the bifocal glasses.

You'll need to call round though to find a contact lens specialist who can fit them though. I would suggest me, but I'm currently not doing general practice.

If they are in the UK and in bifocals they most likely have a convergence excess type of esotropia and sometimes surgery is an option. The best thing would be to get referred back to the orthoptic clinic and ask them. If the squint is large enough, surgery may be an option. If it's quite small, it may be possible to wean her out of the bifocals. What is the nearest hospital with an orthoptic department ti you?
