Could it be growing pains?

My 7 year old has been complaining of a sore leg intermittently- always at bedtime, always after a day of sport or heavy walking.

If it was in both legs, I’d shrug it off as growing pains but it’s only ever in the right leg although not in the same place in his leg.

is this worth a gp trip?

Yes

Definitely worth a GP trip

I will make one. Unsure if I was being dramatic. It only ever hurts at bed time, always gone by morning and it isn’t made worse when walking etc. Doesn’t cause a limp but it is always his right leg (which incidentally is his ‘kicking leg’ in football)

Not saying don’t go to the gp but my daughter (8) has complained of one leg hurting on and off for years now. Not done it for a few months now I think about it

yes, see a gp.

one sided pain should always be investigated.

does he do one sided activities, like riding a scooter?

Erm football, and bike riding today, nothing massively one sided

I would say it’s growing pains, my son has a bone disease which affects the growth, we know all about growing pains 😢. It’s a dull ache usually in the joints , later in the day when they’re tired and been active. By the time they are about 4 most children grow the most in the autumn, no idea why but that’s why my son’s surgery was always done late summer. Air pressure can also effect the pain levels, the higher the pressure more pain. His surgeon actually did a paper about it and used my son as a case study !

I would dose with calpol if needed and warm towels heated in the tumble dryer or a wheat bag works wonders.

I would advise you go to the doctor and get it checked, it wouldn’t hurt to rule out a medical issue

It would be wise to see a doctor, my daughter would complain of pains in her one leg. GP thought growing pains and I too thought growing pains. It was not until she had X-rays after a very nasty car accident the osteo surgeons found shadows in the bone that proved to be benign bone tumours ( as in need over sight from ortho oncology to manage but are not life threatening). With hindsight I should have pushed her GP more.

Hi, I’m a paed nurse. A doctor I know always says growing shouldn’t cause pain, it’s what our bodies are designed to do. I’d absolutely get this checked.

Tunnocks34 · 14/11/2024 19:33

Got it checked. Go not interested. I’d say he gets the pain in alternate legs once every couple of months. Always just before bed. Dr said it’s likely muscle aches from the day
