Hi my DD has just gone 18 months and in the last few months has came out in patchy eczema all over her body . We stated moisturing with child's farm but this didn't seem to do anything if not made it worse and have now been using oilatum which seems to have calmed it down a bit....however over the last few days the creases of her arms have become inflamed and red . She has been touching which has made it worse. Been to the doctor's and he has prescribed eumovate steroids cream sparingly to reduce the redness. However looking on box it says for children over 12 years only so just a bit dubious about using this ?? Has anyone had any experience using this on there babies/toddlers thankyou

My DS had eumovate prescribed by his allergy consultant as a baby. It's worked great. However it was a second stage medication, we tried a mild hydrocortisone with fungal cream first and he now has treatment plans which involve different steroids for his face (hydrocortisone) v body (eumovate) He's now 3 and I barely use it. As long as we use an emollient regularly it's well managed.

Yes when DS was a baby, it was prescribed by the paediatric dermatologist and worked brilliantly.

Lots of medications aren’t licensed in children as they can’t be tested but are regularly used.

Make sure you leave a gap of least half an hour between steroids and moisturising as the emollient creams can dilute the steroids if you use them together.

Same as PP – it was prescribed for DD2 by her dermatologist when she was around 10 months old, and it's been very effective, no side effects. We were told to taper use after her initial course, gradually increasing the spacing between applications.

Also the same as PP, since we found an emollient that worked for her and got the irritation under control, we've rarely needed the steroid – which also means we haven't had to worry about tapering, as we've not used it enough for that to be a concern.

Hi @Laumilem20 this has just happened to my son too at 15 months. I haven’t been able to get a gp appointment yet and am reluctant to use steroids as I’m sure that’s what they will say but it looks like we will probably head that way. I’m glad to hear the oilatum has been helping, I actually started adding it to the bath today so will continue to do so. Do you know what triggered the outbreak across her body? Are you under the dermatologist at all?

@skkyelark which emollient helped your dd? If you don’t mind me asking, we are using cetraben at the moment.

Yes very normal.

Moisturising eczema will do absolutely bugger all to calm it down. It needs steroid. Then once it’s healed, continue to use moisturiser to help prevent further flare ups.

My son started on hydrocortisone, which didn’t work. Then Euvomate didn’t work. Then he was put on Mometezone which has been great.

We’ve used eumovate on our DD since about 2yo.

Our DD hates the feeling of any kind of cream so keeping her moistened and using steroid creams is a complete nightmare. I’ve recently discovered this Cosi Star, my DD has been using it as she’s a terrible scratcher, it’s definitely helping not breaking the skin. She’s asked me for the roller as the stars too big to get around her neck and ears, she’s 6yo. I can’t get her to put cream on it yet but she has promised to try soon.

It might be worth looking into.

@Mildred01 , she has QV, which we also use instead of soap in the bath, but I think it's a bit of trial and error to find what suits each child.

If it's a bad flare-up, it may well need steroid to get it under control in any reasonable timeframe. We did manage to make progress on a stubborn flare up in the nappy region with just emollient when DD2 was a baby (waiting on a dermatology appointment; none of the GPs were comfortable prescribing mid-strength steroids for under a nappy, and hydrocortisone wasn't enough to sort it), but it was progress, not a cure, and it took a couple months of applying emollient 8-10 times a day. But, as I said above, the emollient largely does the trick now that we've got on top of it.
