9 year old constant coughing

Banana1979 · 12/03/2024 22:06

My nine-year-old daughter has been constantly coughing for about five weeks now it is especially bad at night constant coughing every five seconds it’s a mixture between dry and wet. I’ve taken her to the doctor twice. Both doctors has said her chest sounds clear- she was given a course of antibiotics and inhalers, but nothing has worked. The coughing is getting worse. I am pulling my hair out because I can’t sleep she can’t sleep. I’ve taken days off work she’s taking time off school and I’m absolutely at the end of my tether its coming to the point where I’m going to ask her Dad to take her for a few days to give me some respite. I don’t know what to do. Has anyone got any advice around what this could be?
I’ve given antihistamines I’ve given ibuprofen cough medicine ect and nothing stops it

My toddler had this and the dr diagnosed childhood asthma - don’t have to wheeze apparently or struggle with breath, she just has a cough , especially worse in cold dry Co nditions and at night, she now has an inhaler and it is much improved but took weeks of using it, she still has periods of needing the inhaler two years . Maybe it’s this?,

I bet you are, especially when it’s our little ones! I would just keep persisting even when it’s a nightmare with the nhs, till you get an answer

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/03/2024 23:39

Sounds like asthma. Think you need to push for her to be seen again ASAP.

Ladybird69 · 12/03/2024 23:44

Another here saying sounds very much like childhood asthma especially the coughing at night. My boys both had inhalers at bedtime and grew out of it by secondary school. Hope your Gp helps with it for your little one soon x

Marcipex · 12/03/2024 23:48

Sounds exactly like asthma.

Banana1979 · 13/03/2024 00:01

Thank you all so possibly asthma ? I didn’t realise that could just present itself like that all of a sudden . SHe’s having real trouble waking up in the morning for school as she’s coughing all night . I am wondering wether anyone has used benilyn night time children’s cough medicine as I read it’s slightly sedating and may help keep her asleep

Was coming to say asthma too.
yes it can just come on suddenly or after a viral thing sometimes.
does she have allergies? The two can often go hand in hand. Probably worth pushing for the allergy blood test. My dc had this and was found to be allergic to pollen and dust mites.
and if it was me I’d be going back to the doctor and also asking for a spirometer test too for what they call ‘exercise induced asthma’ which can be a cough after exercise but also a morning and nighttime cough.
good luck OP x

Have you checked them for whooping cough? It can last and last

Same with my DS.
He had to have the brown preventer inhaler before bed to stop the coughing and the blue one as and when.
So weird because it’s not like asthma as we know asthma, no wheezing or shortness of breath just coughing.

Go back to the GP OP or ask to see the asthma nurse (I think most GPs have them) and see what they think.

MigGirl · 13/03/2024 00:57

Do the inhalers help at all, what have they given her?

DS has what they call cough variant asthma, it can present like this and his started after a cold. To this day colds still make it worse, although his is normally well controlled with medication.

I would take her back to the doctors, if the inhalers aren't helping much push for pediatric referral. Especially if there is no underlying infection.

PeopleAreWeird · 13/03/2024 01:00

Asthma or allergies

MigGirl · 13/03/2024 01:00

Oh and they can get a wease if it is cough variant asthma, it just happens after they have been Coughing continously for hours first.

@LibbyLemoncake @GrumpySock that’s something to think about - whooping cough I shall mention it @MigGirl I think I will do that -ask to see the asthma nurse
I am not aware she has any allergies. We have had a cat for the past 3 1/2 years though, but she’s always been fine until five:six weeks ago.
It’s past 1 am and I am lying awake because of the coughing . She is awake because of the coughing again it’s going to be a real struggle getting her up in the morning and getting myself ready for work. I’m just so tired with it all

Another one here with a child with same cough, dragging on for weeks. Inhalors, steroids, cough bottles, nothing working... Crazy as it sounds at night put a slick of vaporub on the soles of feet, cover with socks, rub remainder on back/chest... And enjoy the silence 😴

MigGirl · 13/03/2024 08:18

@Banana1979 I hope you got some sleep last night. I lying awake listening to my son cought for weeks until we got it sorted.

It can be both allergy and asthma, we finialy got.my son allergy tested at one point and he has a bad dustmite allergy. Him having antihistamines as well as inhalers, plus montelukast was what helped in the end.

Poor you and poor baby. I hope you got some rest eventually.

Id really recommend allergy testing. You might be surprised. Also did she have a cold or viral thing 5/6 weeks ago? That can start the cough/asthma.

Anyone with a child with dust mite allergy, have you been advised to get rid of carpets?? My doctor advised it 😭 apparently they’re really bad for children with dust mite allergies.

I'm on week 3.5 off a terrible cough, now ill, tired, throwing up. Dr suspects whooping cough, just waiting on the results. The figures for whooping cough are out of control this year. There are specific antibiotics they prescribe for whooping cough and at least were I live if the symptoms fit they are prescribing as it's so contagious.

Jumping on this thread, my daughter has this cough for the past 6 weeks, it's head wrecking.. Back to the doctor Wednesday
