Dd’s one week fever

Dd (13) has had a temperature for eight days. Started amoxicillin yesterday and still doing calpol every four hours. It started as a cold, muscle pain, sore throat and now it’s mainly a chesty cough but an awful headache since the beginning.
Doctor said chest is clear, Covid test was clear. How long do I give it before going back to the doctor? Dd is able to talk and drink, appetite has gone down but not completely, she doesn’t sleep in the day but lies in bed watching films or reading. She’s pretty bored. My main worry was meningitis but her neck doesn’t hurt and there’s no rash. No vomiting either although she feels nauseous at times.
I’m sure it would’ve progressed by now if it was meningitis. I can’t figure out what’s causing the infection. Do antibiotics take a while before they kick in?
I’m so worried!

wait at least 48 hours for antibiotics to kick in

themimprovement should be quick then

Sounds like a flu to me, which is viral. What did the GP prescribe the antibiotics for if chest is clear? Did she say throat or ears looked infected? Flu is quite severe and can cause digestion upset as well as the usual fatigue and cold symptoms, muscle pain.

I’m thinking flu aswell. I think she prescribed them as a precaution as it had been a week already and getting worse
dd now says her heart keeps ‘going fast’ and her chest sounds crackly. I wonder if the doctor heard it properly now!

Fever can cause a higher than normal heart rate but if you're concerned then absolutely take her back or to an out of hours doctor. If you're thinking chest infection with the crackle then the antibiotics should help but they take about 48hrs to kick in unfortunately. Is she drinking plenty?

Crackles that you can hear with the "naked ear" are very likely different to what is heard via a stethoscope (this was a shock to me when learning how to use one)

@ChocHotolate thats very reassuring to know, thank you.
I’ll phone the doctor again in the morning but hopefully the amoxicillin will kick in at some point tomorrow

Strep A/Scarlett fever perhaps? I had it not so long ago after my DD had it, my only symptoms were what your daughter has as well as a couple of rough patches of skin.

Realitea · 12/03/2024 21:36

Maybe. She doesn’t have any rashes, just blotchy due to the temperature

@Nogodsnomasters yes she’s drinking, luckily. I’m hoping there’ll be some improvement tomorrow. We started the antibiotics yesterday mid day

DD had Strep A in December that didn't present with the typical scarlet fever rash or the infected looking throat. Another girl in her class was the same but her Strep A was picked up by throat swab.
