So worried about DS (13)

DS has had consistent, bad stomach pain since mid January. The GP initially thought it was swollen lymph nodes following a nasty cough virus over Christmas. He also at that stage had fatigue and loss of appetite with some weight loss.
He has had 2 lots of blood tests which the GP has said are 'fine'; we have been to A&E on the GP's recommendation to rule of appendicitis and he is currently waiting for an ultrasound on the abdomen.

The pain has been waking him at night the last week or so and he is complaining of dizziness and headache and he just generally feels awful.
I am so worried he has leukaemia, or something else which is being missed. What can I say to the GP to get them to take us seriously?
His school are basically forcing him in without medical evidence of actual illness and he is hating it as he feels so bad.
I will post blood results below.

Is there any way that you can go private to try to speed up the scan? No idea if this is possible but it’s the first thing that came to mind. I’m sorry you are both going through this is must be so worrying. Have they said how long the wait might be for the scan?

He's also had negative tests for parasites, faecal calprotectin and urine infections.
The abnormal blood tests in red were put down to being dehydrated for the tests. I can see he has pretty low ferritin but the GP hasn't mentioned it.

Thank you for replying, it is scheduled for the 26th March and I have today got a GP referral letter to go private for it. Will chase it up tomorrow.

I hope everything goes well. You must be beside yourself with worry. Sending a gentle hug

Hello. I hope the ultrasound goes well tomorrow. Just to say that I went through similar with my DD and eventually she was diagnosed with abdominal migraines. She is now on preventative meds and meds to take if it comes on throughout the day. She’s not 100% but certainly managing it better now. Good luck. It is very stressful when your child is ill.

DGPP · 12/03/2024 15:40

Sorry you are going through this, I just want to reassure you that leukaemia would most likely have been picked up by now in a full blood count

Thank you. Was that diagnosed after everything else was ruled out, or were they exploring that early on? Glad she's doing better now.

Thank you, that is reassuring! I just want to find out why he feels so dreadful.

After everything else was ruled out….. appendicitis, cysts on ovaries, full bloods, scans etc. It felt a bit like we were fobbed off, because I guess I hadn’t really heard of it before and didn’t think it was a proper diagnosis, iykwim, but it seems to have been right for DD and now with meds and learning the triggers, it is more manageable. It’s like a head migraine - quite debilitating - but in her stomach.

Hope all goes well. If nothing at all shows up my son had similar and they finally put him on adult stomach tablets for a few weeks. He was 10 and they gave a small dose but we were all terrified as the side effects listed were crazy and the pharmacist had an argument with the doctor on the phone. This was after the doctor telling us if there was anything out of the ordinary with his moods he was coming off them and had to get straight to the hospital. They worked and nothing since but they said it was ‘just’ a stomach bug that wouldn’t shift (for months!!) So not totally recommending the tablets but just in case you ask could it be a tummy bug

toomanyleggings · 12/03/2024 18:28

Been through similar with dd10, also had copious vomiting. We had all sorts of tests, including ultrasound. The dr at the hospital said young people with those symptoms make up a huge percentage of his patients and they don’t usually find a cause beyond possible IBS or stomach migraines. I was terrified going for the ultrasound as well. Hope it goes well

So he had his scan today. The consultant was very thorough and after looking around carefully she said the only thing she can see was inflamed lymph nodes, meaning mesenteric adenitis. This was what the GPs have thought from the start. She thinks his weight loss, fatigue and dizziness is from reduced appetite/food intake due to the pain. She said it's unusual for it to go in for so long, but to give it a month and if not better ask GP for a referral (not sure who to).
Obviously we are relieved! However he still feels unwell and has been struggling with school, and we are now under the EWO. I hope that this scan will be sufficient medical evidence of a medical condition to support any absences.
Thank you all for your support.
