Just after some opinions really. Ds took a heavy fall from a wall last night in the park. Not massively high but high enough and onto a dirt/stoney track.
He was supporting his arm and crying in pain when we we moved it so I took him to a&e. The nurse practitioner felt the arm, found most of the pain was at his elbow so xrayed that area.
Found no breaks but a lot of swelling which was pressing down on his tendons.
This morning pain is no better, now seems to have migrated to the wrist also. I’m getting myself worked up that they didn’t x-ray the full arm so don’t know if there could be any fractures lower down.
I don’t want to go back again to be sent home and told to rest it. But then again I don’t want to leave it and possibly cause further damage.
Should I leave it 24 hours to see if things ease up? or prepare for another 3 hour trip to a&e 😭

Just go back. You won't feel ok about it until you do.

HoppingPavlova · 06/03/2024 08:50

Do you have a minor injuries/care that you could use instead?

idontlikealdi · 06/03/2024 08:53

Go back. Dd fell off her bike, went to walk in and her arm was xrayed and all clear. Two days later it was a lot worse went back re xrayed and fractured the top of her arm. The doctor said that it was very hard to see so called 'green stick' fractures. I still feel guilt years later.

INeedNewShoes · 06/03/2024 11:10

Go back. Or see if there's a minor injuries unit you could go to.

A 3-hour wait in A&E is a luxury! DD and I waited 8 hours recently...

Trust your instinct. I returned to A&E with DD in December and it turned out to be a bloody good job I did.

Sunshineclouds11 · 06/03/2024 11:12

Get it checked again.
3 hours is good for a&e
Or if you have an urgent treatment or minor injuries units go there

Cloudful · 06/03/2024 12:28

Thanks all. Our minor injury unit is attached to a&e, they triage and move you to the appropriate place. It’s not the wait time, we’re very fortunate to have such a great a&e facility here. It’s that feeling you’re questioning the doctors or wasting their time. I’m going to see how it is when he gets home and pack snacks for another trip if it’s no better. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I wouldn't worry about that. You're not questioning them, her symptoms have changed.

pbdr · 07/03/2024 06:04

Please don't worry about "questioning the doctors". I'm a doctor, and we all do miss things sometimes. We rely on patients/parents like you whose gut is telling them that something isn't right to come back and let us reassess.

User478 · 07/03/2024 06:20

Can you get an emergency gp appointment? Sometimes they are able to refer straight to X-ray so you won't have to sit in A&E?

But yes, I'd get them to have another look

Toddlerteaplease · 07/03/2024 06:26

The pain from his elbow, may well have distracted from the pain in his wrist, take him back.

Jobsjobsjobs54 · 07/03/2024 07:28

Definitely go back. The scaphoid is the most commonly broken bone in the wrist and won't show up on an xray immediately. If there is wrist pain now they might want to keep an eye on it and repeat the xray.

Ambergrease · 07/03/2024 07:46

We had to come back a week later for a possible broken wrist as apparently it often doesn’t show up straight away on x-ray in children.

Then CT and some other type of scan (MRI?) and loads of back and forth. It was a whole saga, turns out to be quite hard to diagnose.
