Would you send to school?

Last night 5 year old was out of sorts. Checked temp and it was 38.9.

He went to bed and was up bright and early. Seems fine. Temp now within normal range. Says he has a bit of a headache but running around the house.

Clearly he wasn’t totally fine last night but seems much recovered this morning. I have meetings but could work it to have him at home today if needed.

would you keep him off? I can’t decide what to do!

No. I wouldn't. We say 24 hours without symptoms/fever before school.

We had the rule that if you got up you were well enough for school. I’d send him.

Thank you!

just checked his temp again and it’s 37.7 so on the cusp of being “up”. He is coughing too so I think I will keep him off!

I’d send him.

I'd keep him off

So interesting that it’s a 50/50 split on the keep him home / send him in!

I'd keep him off. It's likely the temp will rise over the course of the day and you run the risk of him being sent home early and you having to run around and sort that so if you can sort it early for him to stay at home id say that's less stressful on all of you.

For a <38 temperature I keep my daughter at home for breakfast. If she is able to have breakfast and get dressed as normal she goes in. If I can work at home I do that and tell them to have a low bar for sending her home. Since starting at this nursery in August 21 she has been sent home once. If it was over 38 I would keep her at home and use the TV babysitter for the meeting. My daughter is quite good at staying occupied and I can usually do 3-5h of work around cuddles and caring for her.

I'd send him. I only keep them off for sickness bugs or if they have a temperature when waking up but I find temperatures are usually in the evenings and they have bounced back by morning.

Yes I would send to school

Foxesandsquirrels · 06/03/2024 09:07

I'd send in but tell the teacher

Well for those interested, I kept him off in the end - partly because he has been having some behaviour issues and it’s worse when he is tired so I thought he would probably end up getting in a fight with another kid if he isn’t feeling 100% and he doesn’t need to be in trouble at the moment!

Sure enough his temp is back up this afternoon although he is quite chipper.

Think it was the right decision!
