What is this rash?

I've been to the doctors a few times, tried all sorts. A cream, antibiotics and I thought the antihistamine syrup he was on had cleared it but it's back and the antihistamines aren't doing anything now.

He's 3.5 years old and says it's sore, bless him. It's been like this since October. We use baby wipes after he eats to keep it clean and wash his face before bed but I'm at a loss now.

Anyone had anything similar? I thought it might be something he eats but when I track it, nothing is linking to it.

What is this rash?

I would stop using the baby wipes, its probably those causing it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/03/2024 11:33

Stop using baby wipes, it's more than likely a reaction to them. Use a wash cloth and plain water. Baby wipes contain alcohol and perfume which will irritate.

This looks like lip licker's dermatitis to me - lots of suggestions on Google of how to get rid of it but good old Nivea lip balm worked for my child. Soothes the skin but also discourages the licking!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/03/2024 11:56

Moo Goo cream is very gentle and works well but I'd just use plain water for a week to see if that improves things.

squigglylines · 05/03/2024 11:56

Thanks, I'll give these suggestions a go!

Agree with everyone saying stop using wipes. Don't use anything perfumed. Use a good, plain barrier cream like Epaderm. Use a soft muslin cloth that hasn't been washed in bio powder or fabric softener. Epaderm can be used instead of soap too. A tiny bit goes a long way and it can be dabbed on a damp cloth to clean sticky faces and hands. Dry the skin skin gently and apply a thin layer to protect.

Oneearringlost · 05/03/2024 12:26

Impetigo?

LoreleiG · 05/03/2024 12:31

Agree, stop using baby wipes, it could be contact dermatitis and use a barrier cream.

Also a bit of La Roche Posay baume cicaplast at night would clear it up I reckon. It is magic stuff.

Mamoun · 05/03/2024 12:32

Stop wipes and use a very greasy cream at night.

Agree on cicaplast

Bepanthen slathered on at night whilst sleeping helped my two with this. Does baby use a dummy?

Superscientist · 05/03/2024 13:51

Hydromol is the best barrier cream for my daughters face. She gets red rashes when she rubs snot into her cheeks.
We have some wipes with fleece on one side and Terry's square on the other and they are brilliant for cleaning faces. Soft for most of the face but you can switch to the other side for sky stubborn bits

No dummy, but he does drool a little.

That's the name! I recall using some of this when he was a baby for a rash he had. I'll have to order some more, thanks!

Omg my daughter has the same!!! Been going on for months. Tried dermol, Diprobase, sudocream, Vaseline.... can't shift it. DS has eczema and it's nothing like that 🤔

spiderlight · 05/03/2024 16:13

It could be perioral dermatitis. My DS used to get the same rash and we eventually figured out that it was caused by a skin reaction to tomato. Wiping his face with plain water whenever he'd eaten anything with tomato sorted it.

hoonicorn · 05/03/2024 16:41

Try hydromol. My dc had the same and it was just described to me as a common paediatric type dermatitis, common until about age 6. We did hydromol applied frequently during the day and then a 50/50 mix of sudocrem and hydromol during the night and it's gone.
Don't use cortisone or any type of steroids on it it will make it worse

It's awful isn't it, just want to clear it up for him!

I read about this too but after tracking his food I realised it wasn't just happening with tomato based foods.

I've ordered some! Stopping all baby wipes on his face and we'll see how we go, fingers crossed!

Allergic reaction?

Prunesaregreat · 06/03/2024 14:18

My ds used to have a rash like this . I ùsed Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream at night and it almost instantly went. Aldi do an amazing dupe.
