4 year old leaking urine

DD1 (4.5 years) has been out of nappies in the day for over 2 years, and dry at night for over a year. She never has accidents. But the last couple of weeks she's had several instances of leaking tiny amounts of urine. It's not when she needs a wee and isn't able to hold a full bladder - tonight it was about half an hour after going for a wee. She will come to us and say she's wet herself and when we check it's a really small damp patch on her knickers/pyjamas. Never enough to even come through to what she's sitting on or onto her bed etc. It must be less than a teaspoonful.

No other symptoms, no stinging when she wees or anything like that. She's had a couple of UTIs in the past but not recently, and those had symptoms like pain. Could this be a UTI? Has anyone had a child with this?

Is she fully emptying her bladder when going for a wee?

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 02/03/2024 20:17

I assumed so - but actually I guess I have no idea. How would I tell?

Before a couple of weeks ago this wasn't an issue, and she hasn't ever needed frequent trips to the toilet so I've never thought there was a problem there.

We've been having exactly the same problem with my 4.5 year old. I've nearly bought urine sticks to test her wee to see if there's an infection but she's got no other signs. She actually showed me the other day what happens while we were in the toilet and it was definitely more than she hadn't wiped properly. Interested if anyone has any answers!

DD did this for a while "my bottom has leaked" was a regular refrain - it usually happened once or twice a day and we just changed her knickers and carried on. She grew out of it.

Good resources here if it continues. Also if continues for a while then enquire to gp about being put on list for your local children's continence service. Lots of resources for this kind of thing. Could be constipation or even overactive bladder.

Some children don't fully empty their bladder, especially if they rush it. If you get her to sit on the toilet for a few extra minutes while she's calm she might do that last bit that she didn't know was there.

Sometimes wee can end up in the vagina and then release later on. If you search for 'vaginal reflux NHS" on google, you will find some tips for dealing with that. The pages that come up also have tips that will help with ensuring the bladder is fully emptied.

First step though is probably to get her checked for a UTI.

A good tip is getting them (after they have done a wee) to say '1,2,3, do I need another wee?'

Hi @CrispsandCheeseSandwich I was just wondering if you ever got this resolved? This has just started happening to my DD (4.5)

Hiya @Fipfop , just wondering if you managed to find any answers or resolve this for your DD? We're going through the same thing and looking for answers.

It just seemed to stop in its own as quickly as it started. I'd actually forgotten about it until this thread popped up again.
