DD is 8 and has woke up unable to move her neck. She screams out in pain if she has to turn over etc. no other symptoms except slight headache just lying in bed unable to move

thinking it’s the way she lay In bed so not going to seek medical opinion - would you think the same

are you in the UK?

has she only just woken up?

Healthkick · 26/02/2024 12:21

Yes I’m in the UK. No she woke up at 7am and has been in bed since. I was comfortable with thinking it was due to a strained muscle but done a quick google and slightly concerned as it can be a meningitis symptom but she has none of the orhwr symptoms so I’m still thinking it’s muscular. Wanted to see what others thought

so she’s already off sick

and now she’s screaming in agony with neck pain

and you don’t intend to seek medical opinion, but instead go on mumsnet

ok

INeedNewShoes · 26/02/2024 12:26

Has she been up to go to the bathroom? Not passing urine for an unusually long time would be another flag for nasty things.

Presumably you’ve checked her temperature?

Even with the absence of other symptoms, for an 8 year old to be in so much pain that they won’t move out of bed merits a bit of caution to me. I’d see if you can speak to your GP.

I think if there's a risk your child might have meningitis you should go to the hospital

Healthkick · 26/02/2024 12:27

Yes when she moves. The same way I do if I ever strain my neck. Ffs. The NHS is a shambles and I struggle to get an appointment for any reason never mind a neck strain. I just wanted another mums opinion

It is unlikely that she has managed to strain her neck to the point she can't move it by lying funny in bed. We have all woken at odd angles with pins and needles or aches before, but agony is not normal. Has she got a temperature or been otherwise unwell? Have you checked for rashes or swelling? My ds had viral inflammation last year and that was very painful for him. We did need medical attention. I think you should be contacting your gp or 111 for further advice. I hope it's something minor.

She had a small itchy rash on her hand and arm which is now disappeared. She has quite sensitive skin so not unusual. I have called GP been In a queue for 45 minutes and still number 5

How did you get on in the end yesterday @Healthkick ? Did your DD see the GP?

Healthkick · 01/03/2024 13:30

Called GP who suggested a muscle gel and hot water bottle convinced it was muscular. Turned out it was. She had restricted movement for a couple of days but largely back to normal.
