Limping toddler

My DD 2.5 has been limping a bit for the last few days. On Sunday she slipped when we were out walking and seemed to limp for a few steps after that but then appeared to be walking normally, but then the limp appeared over the following days.

She is still running/dancing/jumping as much as usual, which suggests she isn't in significant discomfort with it, but I am finding it hard to keep her still to try and rest it. If it hasn't gone by Monday I will take her to the GP, but wondered if anyone has any tips on how to help her heal at home?

Has she had a cold or other virus recently? Toddlers can get something called transient synovitis which is where a virus settles in their hip joint and cause a bit of pain and a limp for a while.

Was going to write the same as the previous posted re a virus and hip issues. I believe medics take limping seriously for that reason so I’d get her seen. It’s almost certainly nothing to worry about (my son was doing the same last christmas and eventually found he had a splinter in his foot!) but best to be safe.

Thank you both! I have never heard of this and yes she has had two colds in quick succession - still experiencing the tail end of one now. I will give the GP a call this afternoon and get her checked over.

Hi,
My son developed a limp that at first was painless but then noticeably in pain. He went to a&e unable to walk.. they asked over virus as these can show this way. However, in my sons case he was diagnosed with Perthes disease which is evident on a hip x Ray.
I hope your little one is OK and it's just a virus

I was advised always to take a young child to A and E if limping as their bones are different at that age and can be broken but not in obvious pain other than limp.

Thanks everyone. My GP didn't have any appointments left so suggested I go to the walk in centre. They had a look over her, felt the leg etc and said that as she showed no signs of flinching when manipulating/feeling the leg that it wasn't necessary to x-ray her but instead to watch and wait until Monday, which seems reasonable. Hopefully it will all settle down over the weekend, if I can keep her still for more than a few seconds!
