IgM levels

Hello,

Could anyone explain to me what IgM levels are/what they measure?

My son has a genetic condition and has annual blood tests which are always fine, apart from slightly low iron. We were at the GP for something else and I asked her to check his results. The IgM result flashed up red and she said it was low, but not extremely low. I'd just like to know what it means and not 100% sure from Google.

Big caveat: the immune system is huge and confusing and not well understood even by experts.

IgM are a type of antibody, they're the type usually produced in the short-term after infections. Testing for specific IgM (to a particular virus, for example) can help tell if you have had that infection recently.

Total levels are hard to interpret - having them low could mean the immune cells aren't good at producing them, or just that they weren't particularly active at doing so that day. This could relate back to the generic disorder depending what it is, or just be one of those things.

Whoever is requesting the test will see the result at some point and put it together with your child's specific disorder and their history (eg regarding infection concerns). It's not a result that would ever lead to urgent action if found in isolation.

Hope this is helpful.

@Unseenentity that is extremely helpful, thank you very much. My boy has 22q deletion syndrome which has different effects on the immune system, thankfully he's not suffered from serious immune issues. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
