Cough - Tonsils - Pain HELP

sigh. Since I weaned my now 27 month old at 20months he has had tonsillitis after Tonslities. He seems to be sick every 4 weeks

He was never reslly sick before then. He takea his Vit D drops daily and has a very healthy diet home cooked meals with lota of veggies amd fresh fruits and healthy snacks. The child loves to eat raw Garlic and lemons!!!!!.

So he had Bacterial really bad case in July. Then in Oct he caught a nasty virus from playgroup and ended up with Tonsilitis 2 weeks later. Over Xmas spending time with his cousins all School age vaught everything he was sick for 3 weeks and ended up with Tonsilitis. Then after returning home a week later he got it again.
I took him to the Drs 3 times. The first time it was bacterial and they gave him antibiotics. 2nd time they said Viral nothing can be done. 3rd time even though Viral the Dr still prescribed penicillin and 9 days after finiahing the course of 10days it came back!!!! The Dr was very frank and seemed annoyed and said she can refer us to ENT and get them removed even though he hasnt had 6 resorted cases. We went to the Dra for 3 episodes only.

The NHS says they are meant to do a swab to find the cause. He is too young to have them removed and I want to investigate first. Just throwing antibiotics at us.
I used the Difflam oral spray and it seemed to help but a week later he is back at square one. Also 2 of his 2nd molars are cutting slowly! He is a trooper in the day, but at night time all hell breaks loose. Coughing, pain in his mouth so the last 3 nights After dinner right away I give him Neurofen - as Calpol didn't seem strong enough. And so the last 3 days he has complained about stomach Pain. We take it as directed with food. sigh. Now I am wondering if he is allergic or we are using it for too long. It is only 1 dose a day (5ml)

We did probiotics with and after antibiotics. So not sure whats causing this new symptoms.
P.s his stool and bowl movements have been normal and regular. No change.

I know I will probably have to go back to the Drs but fed up of it. They don't seem to have a clue and I want some investigations done and I want to have my sleep back to. He is up every hour recently. He complains of mouth pain, coughing and stomach pain all at the same time. It breaks my heart he is so sad and upset. I have no clue what to do.

My DS has tonsillitis a lot too, and always complains of stomach pain. In fact he will complain of it before he’ll complain of a sore throat. It’s apparently very common in young children with tonsillitis and it’s something to do with their lymph nodes in their tummy.

Also my son has never been swabbed either and I would prefer if he was tbh.

My sympathies as it’s horrific.

Really I had no clue it was linked.

How old os your DC? Are youw anting a referral? So you know of bacterial / Viral.

The last Dr we saw just said some kids have larger then normal tonsils so more prone to issues relating to it and that he will grow out of it eventually but we can get them removed.

I am wondering if it is chronic and not recurrent tonsillitis as his cough has never gone away since Oct!!
I feel very helpless. We even do Medicinal Honey and Black seed oil before bed every night. The Dr said that was great and to carry on. But it isn't helping.

@Destiny123 thank you. I checked and he met all criteria on 3 occasions apart from the age he is under 3. So why didn't they swab him?

Now I have this i will show the Gp. He should have been swabbed sooner.

Definitely isn’t too young to have them out. Mine had them out as soon as he turned 2 for sleep apnoea.

Unless the criteria for sleep apnoea is different.

MixedCouple · 17/02/2024 15:19

Yea the GP said if he jad Sleep Apnea would be a massive concern. But he doesn't. He just snores a bit.

He’s 5 now and we’ve not had a referral, it has tended to fall over weekends so we’ve seen out of hours a lot and I am not sure how instances have been recorded on his record. I mentioned it recently and didn’t get anywhere. I’ve said one more bout and we’ll get them taken out privately to be honest. He becomes very unwell very quickly and isn’t right for long periods afterwards with fatigue.

I haven't worked in gp for 9y, I always did what it suggested, but I often got critiqued for it, as swabs are quite expensive to process, and in most cases individuals get better on their own without treatment, so if we SOS (term used for safety netting "we think this should get better by x, but if it doesn't, or you get worse come back") then when reseen and then have got bacterial super-imposed infection then abx are given... so same end result less costs to the nhs
