Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice ( I have already spoken to the GP) but looking also for some experienced views.

Long post ahead …
I am struggling with my 5 week old and reaction to formula. Due to a traumatic birth I wasn’t able to breastfeed for the first week and although I did manage to get my supply up in week 2 I don’t produce enough for my hungry baby.

He was on Aptamil ready made in the hospital and upon our return home where he has been combi fed aptamil and breast milk wotj no issues. Normal nappies / amount of wind , generally quite chilled baby who slept relatively well for a newborn.

When he turned 3 weeks he began suffering with horrendous wind. I could hear it constantly in his tummy and he was farting a lot , crying out in pain, arching back and wriggling around clearly very uncomfortable and started having very wet nappies and a lot of them , which is normal for some babies I know but was different to how his nappies had been prior, after a week of him screaming in pain and not getting any rest I changed his milk.

I researched on here and Hipp origanic seemed to work for others where aptamil hadnt. Hipp seemed to stop the upset tummy but he has now developed a severe red bumpy rash all over his face / neck and shoulders which is now causing him discomfort.

Am dealing with a possible milk allergy here? I don’t want to keep changing milks and I am keen to avoid a dairy free milk if it’s not needed as Iv even told it’s not very pleasant for them but I am at a loss and it’s awful seeing my baby upset and uncomfortable, is there anything else I should/ could be doing?

would really appreciate any advice

If you’re still breast feeding, have you thought about your diet?
Plus, what are you washing clothes/bedding/towels in?

The dairy free milks taste disgusting but once we got my daughter to take alfamino at 10 months she absolutely loved it and thrived on it. She stayed on it until 26 months as it took until then for her to eat enough food to sustain herself.

The earlier you make the switch the better as they won't be as picky with the flavours. It does taste different to regular formula so there might be an adjustment for a day or so and you can do a graded switch. 1oz of allergy formula in a bottle the rest regular formula and build up.

Look at your own diet too in particular dairy and soya. Half of babies that react to dairy will also react to soya as the proteins are so similar. Even teeny tiny amounts can trigger a reaction.
