Toddler has a lump in thigh?

A few weeks ago I noticed a little lump under my son's leg (upper thigh) - I just thought he might have banged it so just left it to see if it would resolve.

However this morning I've noticed it's got quite a bit bigger and he's trying to scratch it a lot. It feels like a big spot under the skin. I've called 111 and going to head to the walk in clinic now but wondered if anybody had experienced anything similar?

Obviously Google comes up with worse case and now I'm one worried Mum.

It's very likely to be nothing to worry about - but get it checked out

Does it move around at all like it's attached to the skin / under the skin? Or does it feel completely attached

lillyg23 · 11/02/2024 11:10

@FloofCloud it feels hard and doesn't really move around :(

Has he had any vaccines recently?

lillyg23 · 11/02/2024 11:13

@PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister no - the last vaccine was when he was 1 and he's nearly 2 now.

Being out of hours, if they don’t think it’s an infection dealing with today, they might wait until tomorrow to see your own GP or paeds referral for a scan tomorrow. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t taking it seriously. It’s just an “it’s a weekend” thing. Google is a terrible thing in these situations but we all do it and of course your kind goes to the worse. Well done for noticing it and making an appointment.

Very rare for it to be anything serious at that age, and there would be other symptoms. Probably something like a ingrown hair, cyst or boil. See the doctor.

My toddler had the same thing- it never went away but gp was never concerned enough to refer for a scan🤷‍♀️as she’s got bigger it’s much harder to find but there is a tiny dimple
of skin above it that lets me know where it is and if I really push hard I can still feel it. She’s now 9!

Thanks all - you've managed to decrease my nerves somewhat :)

It could be a swollen lymph gland - let us know what they say and good luck

lillyg23 · 11/02/2024 15:11

They said they're certain it's scar tissue from a vaccination and nothing to be worried about - phew!

Back again. Lump has got slightly bigger so doctors are referring him for a scan. Worried now. Anyone else had this and it been fine? He's well in himself :-(

Sorry, I haven't got experience to share. Do you know how long you have to wait for the scan? I hope all is ok.

lillyg23 · 08/04/2024 18:51

@marymoppa no I've not heard yet. Hopefully not much longer :( thank you for replying.

I hope no news is good news. If he is well in himself that sounds good!

@lillyg23 any update ?

My son who will be 2 in april 2025. Has a small lump under skin upper thigh due to vaccines. Lump still hasnt gone. If pressed can feel it

lillyg23 · 28/12/2024 11:13

@Marium1998 hello! Funny you ask, he has a hospital appointment on Tuesday. We had an ultrasound and they said there was no sinister features but sonographer wasn't sure it was. Will be interesting to see what consultant says and whether they'll take it out.

It's very odd because the lump flares up EVERY time he's under the weather with a virus. But it's not a lymph node - so it still could be the vaccine swelling. He always itches it though.

For anybody reading - it's a lymphatic malformation. Benign. Not the injection site. They may remove it if it becomes bothersome.

Hi
No my sons dont flare up or anything its litrally the size of a lentil very small. And only can be felt when pressed into the top thigh. Ive only known that he got this after his vaccines. But im happy to hear your son has been diagnosed. Wish you the best love x
