Amoxicillin powder

Of course, just before holiday DS has developed an ear infection. Collected his prescription that they rushed for us as we are going away today. I’ve just opened the bag and the amoxicillin is still in powder form. I have tried to call pharmacy but they aren’t answering.
The box says the pharmacist needed to add Portable water. Can I add normal water to this or do I need to ask a pharmacist to do this when we get to caravan? X

We've had powder twice, both for longer courses of antibiotics. One time we were given special water from the pharmacy. The second time we had the powder, we were told to use tap water. Both times the medicine worked and DS was fine.

Having said that, they should have given you a child proof bottle to put it in. If you don't have that, you definitely need the pharmacy to sort it out.

Tap water is fine

winesolveseverything · 10/02/2024 16:54

We used cooled boiled water for this and it was fine.

Tap water is fine, potable just means safe to drink

Potable (not portable) water is just drinking water. Pharmacy has different levels of sterility so it means it can just be made up with normal cold tap water. Follow the instructions on the side (they're usually funny volumes but it's important to be accurate) and shake well!

We always get it dry as one of the DC has a medical condition. When you need it you can just mix it up with drinking water - in the UK tap or bottled is fine. You need to add the exact amount it says on the bottle - so use an accurate scale or measuring syringe then shake well.

We were going abroad and had to take a bottle in powder form as the course was quite long, I used bottled water as we were abroad but the pharmacist told me tap was was fine if I was mixing it up in the UK.

Yes, potable just means safe to drink, so tap water is fine. If you want to be extra careful you could boil it first and cool it.

I think you have to store the made up mixture in the fridge.

Thank you. There’s no instructions on the side but luckily managed to speak to a pharmacist who gave me the missing instructions over the phone. Phew! Thank you so much xx

Hopefully they told you it needs to be kept refrigerated and only lasts 7 days when mixed. So might be best to mix it when you arrive.
