2 year old lethargic and drowsy

I wanted to post this here as I wanted to know if anyones ever gone through this before and what it meant. I know every child is different and there could be different things wrong with a child.

my 2 year old (3 in 4 months) had a fever and vomiting for a whole day and after that he has been very drowsy continuously.

we have had two ambulance call outs, 2 seperate trips to a&e, spoken to different gps and all they keep saying is its a viral flu and nothing else. The problem is at the time of triage he is awake but crying because all he wants to do is sleep. Staff at hospital keep telling me hes not drowsy if hes awake. But when at home (fourth day today) he is continuously wanting going to sleep.

Hes pale in the face and hasnt touched food since first day and only living off sips of water. I am really concerned about him but anywhere i go for advice, gp tells me go a&e and a&e keeps telling me its a viral.

hes had viral bugs in the past and ive never seen him this lethargic and drowsy ever. He would at least want to watch tv or have favourite snacks but hes refusing to look at the screen and hes refused all his favourite snacks. I asked doctor at hospital how long should i let him continue to be drowsy for until it’s serious and she goes 1 week. I still dont think somethings right but i dont know what to do to get them to do something.

am i just being over cautious? Is this normal behaviour with toddlers?

Hi OP, has he had a blood test? If not, I would push for one. You know your child best. It may very well be a viral flu (lots about) but I would feel more at ease if I knew his bloods were OK.

They didn’t do a blood test at hosp i did ask for one but at that time he wasnt drowsy so they didnt take his symptoms seriously. Im thinking to go back to a&e because somethings not right here. Hes had a full nights sleep and hes still not wanting to wake up. Been likes this for past 4 days.

There’s something awful going about. My 8 month old there last week was completely not himself. He was lethargic and his eyes and nose were steaming. Even when he was awake his eyes were like slits because he was so tired. He was sleeping all the time and then his pupils went really funny when he was sitting on my knee. It scared the life out of me and I rushed him to a and e. Doctor kept saying it was viral until they looked in his throat and it was very red and his chest was a bit caught. He ended up on antibiotics and steroids and he’s completely back to himself now. I had the same sort of thing and it knocked me for about 2 weeks. Started off with a high temperature and ended with steroids and antibiotics. Does your wee one have a temperature? I would go back to the hospital OP if you’re not content. Do not ignore your gut, your his mother and you know him best x

If your gut says you're not happy, definitely take him back to be seen.

Fwiw, my 14month old had a bug last week - temperatures for 8 days and slept for 22 hours a day. Got him checked twice, definitely viral and settled on its own, so there's some nasty bugs going around x

yes he did have one but not anymore. I do think theres a viral going round too someone else has mentioned the same symptoms so i guess its kind of reassuring.
