My little girl is having tonsils/adenoids out and grommets inserted tomorrow after years of struggling with mouth breathing, sinusitis and glue ear. Very much needed but I'm a ball of anxiety... any positive stories to calm my nerves? She's 4.

My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids out last year aged 4. I was amazed at her recovery and even though she felt rough for a week or so after it wasn't horrendous. Keep up with the pain relief for at least the first week even if you think they don't need it. It was horrible sat there waiting whilst they took her down for the op but she was back pretty quickly and within an hour or so tucking into lunch!!! Don't let on you're anxious in any way and they'll mirror your calmness. It was such a life changing op for her in terms of breathing, sleeping etc. Best of luck for tomorrow x

Mine had her tonsils and adenoids out (so I don’t know anything about grommets sorry) but she was in and out in less than an hour - amazed me they can do it that quick. Mine was surprisingly calm and got the magic cream on her hand in advance to numb it before they put the cannula in.
afterwards they warned me she would cry as she came round from the anaesthetic as that’s just a side effect. Once she got by that she was ok. They wanted to see her eat something before they’d let her home-she had a pancake I think. They really encourage eating textured food now to aid recovery. Got out same day and we stopped for a takeaway McDonalds on the way home. I was surprised by how much she managed to eat! keep on top of the pain meds even if they feel ok-It’s true that they say the pain gets worse after a few days but as long as you keep the painkillers topped up it helps them eat.
I was amazed how well mine did and the staff are so fab with them xx

Thanks both that's really reassuring and good advice. On the way to the hospital now, fingers crossed we aren't waiting too long as she's already saying she's hungry for breakfast! X

I had the exact same done myself at age 4. I still recall having almost monthly ear infections and pain beforehand.

Afterwards, only a handful of infections in the past 40yrs.
I remember blowing my nose and there was blood, so tell your DD that is normal. I was also unaware that the grommet will work its way out. I still remember going to the ENT weeks later and him removing it with a long, metal probe 😬 TBH- that was worse than the actual surgery, but only because I wasn't excepting it

She’ll be fine. Young children recover extremely well after the operation.

The same can’t be said for adults though. Thats another story however all I will say is that if you have to have your tonsils out at 40 it is a very different situation and recovery process.
