Barium swallow on a baby/ young child?

Hi All

My baby is coming up for 11 months old and we have always had difficulty with solids. He projectile vomits on certain textures. He is ebf, had a late diagnosed but snipped tongue tie that left him with a high palette (due to shallow breastfeeding latch from the tie, we’ve never managed to get a deeper latch but I am pain free and he has always gained weight very well so we’ve just gone with it). He has never taken a bottle and it’s hit and miss getting him to drink anything from a cup.

We have been referred for speech and language therapy to support with his swallowing, however alongside they have also referred us for him to have a barium swallow to rule out any issues with the oesophagus.

Given he won’t take a bottle, I have no idea how they are going to get him to drink the chalky liquid?! Has anyone been through this before?

Thank you in advance

My son had one about 11 ish months old. He was allowed to do it with a yogurt as he was not allowed to drink. He was born with a whole in his eosaphagus so it would go onto his lungs.

Thank you @Christmas202 , that’s really reassuring as my son loves yoghurt. He will be 12 months by the time we have the appointment so quite a similar age.

Was the process distressing for them? Hope not, but want to go into this as prepared as possible.
Hope your son is doing well now

He’s turning 11 on Thursday and his swallow is fine now. It’s a very horrid smell as far as I remember but he took it no problem

@Christmas202 ah that’s great news. Thank you so much

My son had one similar age, mixed into his favourite jarred baby food as he absolutely took no liquids orally

@SleepingStandingUp ah that’s great thank you. Sounds like it’s possible to mix it into food rather than drink it, which he just wouldn’t be able to do
