Bathe it with cool boiled salt water (one cotton bud at a time, wiping from inner eye to outer). Is there any discharge?

Birthdayhat · 01/02/2024 07:29

Yes see the GP - could be periorbital cellulitis, would need antibiotics.

cocoapple · 01/02/2024 07:30

@Boatshoes thank you will do, no discharge

Or go to opticians- probably easier to get appointment
Or even pharmacist

Tilllly · 01/02/2024 07:58

I'd be inclined to put a cool eye pack on for a minute or two. It'll bring the swelling down a bit so ease the discomfort

hellomi · 01/02/2024 08:00

I'd go to an optician. When DD had a swollen eye recently the GP receptionist referred us to an optician.

Fraaahnces · 01/02/2024 08:01

I think the optician is a smart call. If necessary they could call and get your DS referred. You have a greater chance of being seen before 2038.

orangeoctupus · 01/02/2024 08:05

I'd call GP and get an appointment for today and try the optician as well - all both as early as possible and see who can see him first.

cocoapple · 01/02/2024 08:06

Sorry only just seen your posts about opticians. He’s got an appointment at the gp at 9:40

NHS advice

DS eye-GP?
TheRulerofThings · 01/02/2024 08:14

Is it swollen? My 5 year old DS woke up one morning with a swollen eye. Brought him to the GP that afternoon who sent him straight to hospital. He was in for five days on IV antibiotics with periorbital cellulitis.

cocoapple · 01/02/2024 08:16

@TheRulerofThings yes very swollen. Starting to look like it’s dropping to the side now

@cocoapple your poor DS. It’s really good you have an early appointment with the optician. I suspect they’ll send you to get it checked out by a doctor/hospital - they won’t take any chances if there’s the possibility of an infection.

Of course get him checked out as soon as you can but don’t worry too much about periorbital cellulitis, as cellulitis means a bacterial infection of the skin. Swelling most of the time is accompanied by redness in the condition, so more likely an allergen has affected his eyelid, if it is cellulitis it will be caught ver early and treatment is VERY effective.

underneaththeash · 01/02/2024 09:38

I'd be sending him down to eye casualty OP (I'm an optometrist).
He'll be fine though - sounds as if you've got him seen quickly.

cocoapple · 01/02/2024 10:52

Thanks for the advice everyone. The doctor wasn’t too concerned. By the time we got to the appointment it had actually improved. I showed him the photos and he said if his eye was still like that he’d have sent us to the eye hospital. I’ve just got to keep an eye on things and if it goes back to how it was this morning then to take him to hospital
