Had Dd at Dr with a rash, nursery were afraid it was chicken pox, Dr said she 'thinks' it is. My question is does chicken pox always itch, she not bothered by it, not itching at all, just has a bit of a cold now and been waking at 4am past few mornings

No, I don’t remember my kids itching too much, but when I had it it was very itchy.

Could you post a photo? Chicken pox is quite a distinctive rash

Has she been in any sort of pool?

We had a chicken pox scare with DS last summer, even the GP thought it was. We were mystified because no other symptoms but it turned out to be a rash from unclean hot tub 🤢 (we realised I had it too and I’ve had chickenpox so it couldn’t be that.)

Difficult to see from the picture @19annie86 but have the spots got little blisters? Maybe not all of them, but certainly the bigger ones probably would be blistered if it's chicken pox. There might also be one spot that's bigger than the others.

DTD wasn’t itchy with chicken pox and only had a handful of spots so it was hard to tell (even the pharmacist wasn’t sure) but two weeks later DTS was covered in spots so that was our confirmation. Apparently the hall mark of chicken pox is to have one pink spot, one blister and one crusted blister at once but DTD’s spots never blistered.

From your picture it could also be hf&m. Would suspect this if you find any spots —even one - on palms of hands/soles of feet.

The itching comes with time- when they dry out it’s particularly bad. I kept DCs skin moist with lotions which helped.

If I were you, I’d moisturise her face so she doesn’t get scabs that could scar. I’d leave her body be for the moment and see if the tell tale black scabs form. Then you’ll know.

This is a slightly better picture, only a few had tiny little blister, none on hands or feet, only tummy

Looks like chicken pox to me. Iirc mine only complained of itching once they started drying out/scabbing over.

8lue8irds · 31/01/2024 11:36

That looks very like chickenpox to me. The blisters don't appear immediately.

19annie86 · 31/01/2024 12:55

Do these look like crusts if it was mild form

That looks like chicken pox. When DD had it, the spots started smallish, kind of like bites, then the next lot that appeared were bigger and mankier. I found that if she wasn't aware of them she didn't touch them but once she started, that's when the itching started iyswim.

When I had chickenpox (aged 20), I was absolutely covered, high temperature and was congratulating myself that it hardly itched at all and people made such a fuss about it, and me, as a normally itchy person was not finding it too bad.

Then I decided to go and sit outside and see if I cooled down at about 5-6 days into it.
I did. My temperature returned to normal and the itching started. I itched all night and after about 12 hours decided I'd had enough, and maybe if I could get my temperature up then it would stop.
So I had a long hot shower. And I came out with my temperature well up, and no longer itching.
My temperature came down naturally about 24 hours later and I didn't start itching again.

Now I don't know whether the temperature thing actually worked, or whether it was just coincidence, but I know I didn't itch until well into the spots being out.

Looks like CP to me too.

When we had it here, DS got it first and it hardly bothered him at all. He gave it to DD and she was itchy and a bit uncomfortable, but still okay. They say the second sibling gets it worse because they've been exposed to it for longer.

Hope it gets better soon, OP.
