When to worry about toddler's flu?

Toddler (recently turned 2) had a fever since last Monday. All the usual flu symptoms emerged over the next few days.

At first the GP thought it might be scarlet fever so gave us antibiotics - they didn't help after a few days so a call to OOH GP confirmed that it's much more likely to be a virus like the flu.

Last night (Sunday) whilst he was sleeping, he finally seemed to break the fever. He's woken up this morning without a temperature for the first time in a week - hurray!

However, he's still really reluctant to do anything other than sit on the sofa, he's got a nasty cough, and he's just very miserable.

My first instinct was not to worry anymore as the fever has gone, so he must have fought it off. But I was chatting to my mom who thinks we still ought to take him to the GP again today as he's still not himself.

So, I just wondered what other people on here might think? He's never been poorly for more than a day or two at a time before so this is all new for me. He's still on antibiotics until Saturday (I assume he has to finish the course?) so I'd thought he's not likely to have a chest infection or anything? I don't know. I just want him to get back to his usual happy self!

If I'd already had antibiotics prescribed then I wouldn't go back personally, unless I'd felt he'd deteriorated beyond the normal "I have a nasty cough and it's making me miserable" stage. It's horrible to see them so wiped out though.

Yes @Merrow , I think it's just as you say. He's a lot more vocally upset today, but I feel like that's because he's no longer dealing with a fever and is starting to feel a little more energetic and able to vocalise his feelings.

He's having a little nap now, which he'd never normally do unless unwell, so hopefully the rest will help him.

He is has treatment and is improving. I don’t think you need to see the GP again at the moment.

He’s been poorly, it always takes a few days for them to get back to themselves 100%. He’ll be tired after fighting off whatever bug he’s had.

No need for further appointments unless he deteriorated again - high temp that doesn’t come down with medication, listless, hard to rouse, cold hands/feet with a raging temp etc.

I’d let him chill out for a few days and I’m sure he’ll be back to bouncing around in no time.
