Impetigo, eczema or chicken pox?

1 year old has had what I thought was eczema behind knees and in elbow creases for a couple of months and I’d been using aveeno dermexa after baths which kept it at bay. The last couple of days behind his knees and his bum crack now have really flared and I don’t know what this is. Had video call with Gp today who says do nothing and wait and see. If it scabs then it’s impetigo and we have a px for antibiotics. There is a case of it at nursery. He isn’t itching or bothered but it looks so awful. Any ideas? Do we just keep putting bepanthem on which I hope will sooth it a bit while we just wait?

From my experience, impetigo just gets bigger and bigger each day. It will look a lot larger/worse tomorrow if it is

Did the gp not suggest a steroid if it was eczema?

It looks like infected eczema to me. Dts had it all over and it was just like that.

It would be an unusual place to have impetigo.

My dd has literally the exact same thing going on... it's taken me an over a week and a 5.30am trip (and a 7 hour wait!) to a&e in desperation as literally couldn't get anyone else to see her...

They said infected eczema, but I've never seen it present in this way before (I've had eczema all my life)... she's now on antibiotics and they have given her steroid cream... it's made it less 'angry' looking but she still has those spots... she's had chicken pox and I know you can get it twice, but it's presenting completely differently to when she has it.

Very frustrating.

Infected eczema? Gosh I've never heard of that before.. is it easily treatable? Is it recurrent? Neither dh or I have had eczema before so it's a new experience all round.. sorry to hear about your long wait.. fortunately we were able to tap into private medical insurance and get a video call today and really hoping can see GP in person tomorrow! 🤞

It could be discoid eczema. DD’s started out as a small round patch that we thought might have been ringworm, then spread, became scabby and bleeding. The GP had no idea what it was so we ended up seeing a paediatric dermatologist privately who diagnosed it.

@DappledOliveGroves Was hers
itchy? DS doesn’t notice his and seems fine in himself? A couple spots appeared on his face tonight too.. really not sure.

Very itchy. She’d scratch at night in her sleep.

My 1 year old had/has impetigo. It started last Sunday and spread very quickly. I thought it was teething rash at first (chin/neck/bum) but went onto his eyebrows and legs/ arms. The yellow/ crustiness was the sign it was impetigo (this came 2-3 days after the spots and rash first appeared).

It seems to be in the folds of her skin where it would get hot and sweaty knees and elbows and bum crack as you said

Now she's walking so exercising it might improve because those areas won't be so folded up as it were with more movement

Mirrormeback · 29/01/2024 00:24

It doesn't look like impetigo
