Hospital glasses prescription

We needed replacement glasses recently, but the opticians told me the prescription was about to go out of date. We're waiting to hear from the hospital for the next appointment, but I know they are running behind so we haven't heard yet. If the glasses break in the meantime after the prescription runs out, will they not give us new glasses? Only reason I ask is because we're constantly having them mended/replaced, and although we're trying a newer pair, we couldn't be without them if they were to break (second pair also temperamental). Or do I need to chase up the hosptial? I was going to give it a month or two, but won't if the optician can't use the old prescription?

Also, has anyone successfully been given two pairs for an under 7? I usually pay, but as they keep getting broken, I believe we should be able to get two pairs - the opticians said they never see prescriptions like this anymore?

Follow up?
Why is your prescription by hospital, I have a stick on prism, due to issues, can’t be worked into glasses.
So eye test, glasses made up , then appointment to get prism fitted, lengthy

My son is 14 and still under hospital care for his eyes - he is always prescribed two pairs at a time.

i would phone to see where he is if your due a new test.

So yes, in theory, we can dispense from a prescription that's out of date in some circumstances. For example - if you had an appointment booked with the hospital and you could show evidence.

Sometimes there is leeway for a second pair to be dispensed, especially if a child is under 7, has a high prescription and keeps breaking them, but the opticians would need to submit a second pair application form and have it approved. Sometimes the hospital can do this too.
