Child Bit Into Washing Capsule

I could kick myself - my autistic 5 year old managed to get hold of a washing capsule I put on the side while I turned my back - anyway, he ran in making a lot of noise, and downed a drink, we couldn't work out what was wrong for a couple of minutes (he's non verbal) - he spat his drink out and subsequently my husband found the washing capsule - not much of the contents had leaked, and after 5 mins he's happily running around again, and no longer smells of it.

I called 999 in a panic, and they suggested driving to the local A&E, which I will do - but it is such a trauma for him I just can't bear to be there all night needlessly and put him through that (he has a deep fear of hospitals after some intrusive tests) - but equally I'll probably spend the night worrying.

I know posting here is not the solution, but I would appreciate any advice.

Glad all is ok OP, bizarrely I opened a new box of tabs last week and commented to DH, Christ lol at these bright colours, are they necessary?

I don't think they are!

PatheticDistraction · 18/01/2024 10:39

He left for school happily this morning, and slept soundly once we got home. But he can't tell us if he feels sick etc. I am really worried

Please, this is making me so anxious - the doctor barely got a look at him - would there be any additional signs that it was doing him damage??

Had something serious as the burns I mentioned happened to him, you would know by now so I would be reassured by the doctors examination. This all happens very quickly which is why going to A&E (without waiting) is recommended

As I also mentioned, some capsules are less corrosive and harmful. There is every chance this was the case for you - they would have checked this

DocOck · 18/01/2024 10:43

Children have died from eating these pods so you definitely did the right thing going to A&E to get him checked. I wouldn't stress about it too much now because I think you'd know about it by now if there was a problem and as you say, it's likely he may not have ingested any if they liquid was still in the pod.

@kisstheblarney I said the same recently, my 3 year old is fascinated by them. Why not just make them grey and miserable, they'd stay well alone!

Daffodils234 · 18/01/2024 10:52

OP - I would just keep a close eye on him. He has been seen by a doctor as well - you are doing a good job by getting him checked. If he doesn't show any signs of being ill (tummy issues / vomiting / lethargy etc) then try not to worry. If you don't think he is right in himself (i.e. not his usual self) then I would go back to A&E and ask for him to be rechecked. Otherwise, try not to worry x

Pull out the box it came in - there will be a number to phone to talk to the manufacturers. Speak to them, they'll be able to talk you through anything to watch for.

MizzMarple · 18/01/2024 11:07

OP I really didn’t mean to worry you. I just wanted to warn other people to get medical help. You’ve had that. It was very obvious that something was extremely wrong within a short time of it happening when it happened to mine. Also, as dramatic as it was, a day or two later he had recovered as if nothing had happened.

Thehamsterthatcametotea · 18/01/2024 11:10

@PatheticDistraction just wanted to say that you sound like a great mum.
It might be worth creating a hospital passport for any future visits. It will help the staff to understand and care for your ds in a way that is less distressful for him (and you).

Oblomov23 · 18/01/2024 11:14

@prescribingmum not necessarily irresponsible at all. Eating the whole thing, compared to a tiny amount leaking, and then even not being sure how much of the tiny amount that had leaked, had actually been consumed. Are very different things.

Different things or not it is extremely irresponsible. A person on an internet forum does not know the content of the capsule, how corrosive it is or how much has exposed to skin/mouth or possibly been inhaled. Different things or not, how can they possible judge what intervention is needed?! Also not a medical professional so in absolutely no position to comment.

Some dishwasher capsules are so corrosive they burn through the skin. I’m sorry but no one should be advising against 111/999 when they have no medical background (as you have clearly demonstrated by not knowing how dangerous the capsules have the potential to be) and have not seen the child in question

Such a draw for little ones! Plus the smell
Is appealing!

@prescribingmum
First of all for starters I never advised her. Of anything. not to go to A&E, and I never advised her to not ring 111 or not ringing 999. I never gave any medical advice whatsoever. Thank you very much.

And plenty of people on Mn may or may not be Doctors. and may not have no medical qualifications , but are perfectly entitled to an opinion, and considering that op stated in her op that only a tiny amount had seeped out, and it was abundantly clear that child had not swallowed the whole thing. it had not sprayed all over them, burning their skin, or squirted into their eyes, do none of that is relevant.

and we had no idea how much I've been consumed, admittedly, but it was blatantly obvious only a tiny amount had seeped out , so I do think it makes a big difference as to whether a tiny amount has leaked out, as opposed to the whole capsule had been consumed.

And also irrespective of whether anyone is a trained medical person, trained doctor or has any medical advice, opinions or views are allowed here.

other posters are reacting in a different way to ourselves. Some, I myself consider them utterly angst ridden, which is what I find a lot of mn to be, and that's just my own view. Which I'm allowed. Thanks very much .

Hello can I ask how he is and did they get soical services involved. My son got hold of a pod and he is austic aswell and I have the same problems and hate hospital visits I had to snatch off him and went all over his hands and mine he ran off I quickly got him and went to wash his hands I'm worried if he licked his hand or something with it on there when I turn round to turn tap on I'm panicking and reading all this thread and on goggle about it can kill you it's making me have extreme anxiety. He was not showing symptoms of poisoning no sickness or coughing etc he did after I washed his hands drink a lot of his juice so I'm unsure wherever he tired a lick of it on his hand he had no edvince of pink liquid or smell around the mouth of it.

He won't watch an ipad sadly, it will just be head banging and self injury when we get there, that's my fear. He still has bald patches from where he tore his hair out last time 😞

Our neighbour is a doctor, and their light is on - so I might give them a knock before we go and get their opinion.

No call 111 it's not fair to the Dr. We are Drs and we help as bystanders in emergencies also several advice but I do not appreciate just being called in for anything that we've not witnessed off duty and anyway probably won't even know without someone looking up toxbase

grace2025 · 23/01/2025 00:06

It's not fair to knock on Drs door it would really drive me away from an area - we are already at work so much you need home space to be safe.

Instead of wasting time posting here or worrying about SS, get your child to hospital now.

The OP was a year ago. Someone else has just commented having had the same thing happen.

Kezzer20 · 23/01/2025 00:17

But I'm unsure if he did or didn't put in mouth it went all over our hamds amd I washed them but I'm not sure where ever he could habe licked it maybe I'll ring 111 and see what they say

grace2025 · 23/01/2025 00:17

Should add I've no idea what is the right thing to do. I'm not a paediatric dr and also not in AE not seen the child so either take to Ae or call 111 at least.
