Can anyone help with blood results In Crohn's ?

My DD (13) has Crohn's, been well controlled for two years but recently weight loss, increase in toilet use, etc, calpro is up at 800, .and a fast heart rate on exertion, revealed by her fitbit.

Recent blood results show what I think might be anemia, but her folate and ferritin are ok - low end of acceptable range. Am I right in thinking this could be contributing to her fatigue and fast heart rate on exertion? Can you be anaemic but have ok iron stores? I don't really understand.

It is possible to have anaemia from chronic disease, independent of iron studies. Also ferritin is not reliable in inflammatory conditions. I would check in with your child's Paeds/gastro team as they're responsible for interpreting the results and making a plan if needed.

She is definitely showing symptoms of anaemia, dizziness on exertion and tingling lips and hair loss are also symptoms when it gets severe.

It is possible to have the results you have had with an inflammatory GI conditioyn like crohns. As pp said her consultants should be reviewing these results and providing a plan, make sure they are aware of the extent of her symptoms and any worsening.

If I'm reading right and her HB is 109 then that's low and is most likely causing the fatigue etc. My dds hasn't gone above about 105 in two years. It may be she's having a relapse and needs her meds assessing.

My ds has Crohns and I'm a nurse. Sounds like she's flaring - have you got follow up soon?
She's definitely anaemic and results suggest iron deficiency so as a result of poor absorption due to her IBD. The hospital can do an iron level ( different to ferritin and folate), inflammation can cause elevated ferritin so not as reliable in IBD.

Thanks everyone.

She saw the specialist last week, they are scheduling for more scopes but said it could take a couple of months, and they'd get the dietician to call in the meantime. Just got dietician appointment for mid April!!

I have started her on a daily spatone and an ensure plus a day (I would prefer she had two or three, but she is a bit resistant).

Update: she has been invited for an iron infusion in a couple of weeks. Should I stop the spatone til then?

Her ferritin was 21.

Check with your doctor. My dd is having an iron infusion next week. She's been told to stop her iron tablets 3 days before and not start again until she's had another blood test to check the levels.
