Hi all,

First Post but I am freaking out! DD (4) is finally having her tonsils and adenoids out and grommets fitted..been waiting 2 years but now I am freaking out.

Any tips to help when surgery day comes around? After the op? Are they really in so much pain.. don't know if I could manage seeing her in pain like this.

My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids out in October. I was very worried about afterwards as had been told the pain can be very bad (day 5-7). Luckily for us my daughter had one day (day 2) where she said she was in a lot of pain but otherwise was fine. Best advice is to keep on top of pain killers....even if they aren't saying they are in pain...and alternate calpol and neurofen so it covers 24 hrs. We set alarms for first few night. Also a humidifier in her room and diclofen (think thats what it is...it numbs throat). We were also.told that ice cream and just soft food is a myth...they should be eating normal food as aids healing and reduces recovery time. Nurses told us that us that she could have as much ice cream as she wanted but after she'd had a normal meal first. Hope it all goes OK!

DD had her adenoids out at 3yrs and after the first couple of days with regular painkillers it didn't bother her at all and her health/sleep improved massively quite quickly.

At 5yrs she had her tonsils out and omg it was awful for over 8 days. I think it was due to the scabs forming on the operation site as one day it was like a pain switch flicking to off. Full on painkillers not working then needing none at all. Very bizarre.

Do not offer fruit or fruit juice AT ALL until her throat has healed properly. I had mine out at 18ys and the absolute agony of a sip of orange juice remains with me nearly 50yrs later. Childbirth was less painful 😱

Hope she recovers well. Painkillers are definitely your best friends.

Sorry to jump on but can I please ask why your DD is having this operation, my DS is in the same boat too 🥹

I hope the operation goes well x

She has glue ear, which is affecting speech and has sleep apnea alongside just constant ear infections and sore throat. Had to fight for 2 years as first ent we saw when she was 2 was like she will grow out of it 🤦‍♀️ despite speech/sleep apnea/will only eat soft foods and small amounts as anything to big will choke

Good luck

My son had the same surgery yesterday. He seems to be recovering well. We are keeping up the pain meds and feeding him normal foods. The hospital did prescribe oral.morphine but he hasn't needed any of that so far. He hasn't snored once when sleeping since and can hear so much more already.
