Threadworms v Ovex

blonde2021 · 13/01/2024 19:52

My DS started complaining of an itchy bum on Tuesday evening (4 days ago). Checked and he had threadworms. Managed to get to a pharmacy and dose him with ovex tablet. I've been checking him daily at night and worms are still coming... we are following all the hygiene methods and he has only been for one poo since (nothing showing in poo).

I'm just wondering what experiences in terms of noticing a change when having taken the ovex were noted and how you knew it was working or had worked.

Any replies would be very appreciated!!

Are the worms dead or alive? You will definitely see dead ones pass

blonde2021 · 13/01/2024 19:56

The only ones I've seen since Tuesday are alive and coming out. Not seen any dead ones.

It takes a few days to work as it starves the worms rather than chemically killing them

blonde2021 · 13/01/2024 20:14

Is it normal to see them being passed in bowel movement at some point?

Remember to change sheets, towels etc. But youll already know that. (Dont want to patronise)

You may need to repeat the Ovex after 2 weeks.

You'll definitely need to repeat it as those live worms are laying eggs which will start the cycle again. I've sometimes had to give 3 doses & I think I sometimes gave them a week apart if they didn't seem to be having an effect.

Yes I'm washing bedding, clothing, towels daily. Already washed and removed all cuddly toys.

I know ovex starts working immediately but just wondered how quickly you see a change with the worms. I'm pretty sure I caught and treated within 2 hours of the itchy bum so assuming the worms coming out now are still the originals and making sure showering morning and night to remove any eggs on body in the morning.

I've read various threads about them coming out in the poo and as he's only had one bowel movement (3 days post treatment) haven't seen any in that. So just wondering what then actual difference will be to tell it's working or if I may need to contact GP to see if it's worth taking a second dose earlier than the 2 week mark.

In our house ovex pretty much works within 24 hours. Ie itchy one night, take ovex immediately (same night), no itching the next night. I always have some in the cupboard as 1 child seems to get them 2 or 3 times a year. None of the other 4 of us in the house ever get them, just the 1 child.

Seems to work between 24 and 48 hours in this house, itching stops then dead ones come out in their poo.

If he's only pooed once in 3 days then I'd say he's constipated and it's going to cause more of a problem with getting them shifted.
