Flu and babies

Hi all,

My 10yo DD has what I think is actual flu, as she's CV-negative.

High fever, exhaustion, blocked nose, dry cough, etc. Definitely more than 'just' a cold.

I'm a bit worried about what to do with my five month old DD. Trying to keep them separated. I'm not breastfeeding, btw.

I read a bit online about anti-virals, prophylaxis or early treatment, does anyone have any experience? Do doctors normally prescribe this? I don't even know if/how they test for actual influenza...

Thanks in advance. And please, no scary stories, I am shattered from looking after DD and quite an anxious person in general.

I'm not sure you can do much more than you are! Try keeping them separated, thorough hand washing and anti bac surfaces, door handles in shared spaces etc.

I understand the nerves. My baby was 8 weeks prem and v vulnerable, I felt like I could see germs everywhere when she was little!

Thank you for your kind response. I got one of the chemist tests and it IS flu. Older DD seems to be turning a corner today, fingers crossed. She had the flu spray in December so that hasn't fully worked but perhaps the symptoms are less.

Just trying to keep them separate. I did call 111 and they said to call straight back if the baby gets symptoms as antivirals can be given in the first 48 hours (for babies under six months or others at particular risk for flu). Useful to know.
