19 month old BOY - UTI

Hello,

Looking to see if anyone has any experience of a similar situation.

My wee boy had a fever/high temp of 39 over the Xmas holidays and when checked at OOH and urine dipped nothing showed. His fever lasted about 3 days and on day 4 (day after fever stopped) was confirmed with a UTI. I’m confused as to why the fever stopped before he was given antibiotics as doesn’t really make sense?

also wondering if anyone has experience of young boys with UTI as we have been told he will get a children’s hospital referral due to these being rare in young boys.

any experience appreciated.

xx

My son had UTIs as well when he was younger. Also had to have a hospital referral, they just did an ultrasound to check his kidneys and bladder were normal and he didn’t retain wee in his bladder after going to the loo. Everything was fine, and my GP was advised by his consultant to give antibiotics for any fever not obviously caused by a cold / tonsils / ears etc to avoid the risk of damage to kidneys from an untreated UTI. It’s possible his body was fighting the infection off itself if his temperature was going down but sometimes a lowered temperature can be a sign that sepsis is developing so I’d always be on the safe side personally.

Also I found that giving him cranberry juice and encouraging him to go to the loo regularly helped minimise the infections, if they’ve a tendency to hold on or to constipation that doesn’t seem to help either. I don’t think there’s any strong evidence for cranberry juice but he liked it mixed with grape juice and water for a treat!
