Type one diabetes - just ruling it out?

Son age 10 is very underweight, had a blood test a year ago reqs by dieticians - normal results. his appetite was surprised by medication but is off medication and appetite has improved now. But he is not gaining weight and is very thin.

I've noticed sweet smelling breath on him occasionally. He has difficulties with food, sometimes doesn’t eat much, sometimes eats loads.

No problem with drinking too much or peeing more than normal, no family history of diabetes.

is it worth seeing GP again? I keep wondering (overthinking) whether he could have a normal blood sugar result for his test even if he had type 1 and it could be ‘missed’? And whether sweet breath on its own is enough to warrant a test.

Definitely worth getting it checked out again

Lots of people are diagnosed really late in life with type 1 diabetes which is strange but true

*suppressed by medication not surprised by it! Grin

thanks @Mirrormeback . Just not sure if I’m clutching at straws

Yeah, get him checked again I'd say

Absolutely go to GP and bring urine sample to be checked for high blood glucose and ketones. Also ask for a finger prick for blood glucose. The very early signs for my type 1 diabetic child were stomach pains, weight loss and spells of blurry vision. Later the bed wetting and drinking happened.

Please please get this checked out and Don't be afraid to keep checking or bring to.A+E if you are still worried. Sadly type 1 can be missed by G.Ps as happened with us until it was a serious emergency.

Look up diabetic DKA and do not take any chances.

Thank you so much. I remember someone telling me about a coma they fell into as an undiagnosed T1. I won’t take it lightly don’t worry @Singasongofsixpence24

Yes please get it checked. My son went to the gp a couple of times before his T1 was picked up. At the stage that things got bad we had the sweet smell, wetting the bed and terrible thirst, as well as weight loss and crankiness.

Definitely get it rechecked. Do you know anyone with diabetes who could do a fingerprick test for glucose or ketones, or a ketone urine test today? Read up on the symptoms of DKA and go to a&e if any of it sounds true.
