Thyroxine - when does your child take it?

My teen has just started thyroxine and you are supposed to take it 30-60 mins before eating and I am really struggling with this as during the week he gets up at 7am and leaves for school at 7.40 with breakfast at 7.30 so I end up hovering over him so when he is half awake I'm giving him a tablet - I try and catch him before he gets in shower.

i am really struggling with this as I also have other kids to get ready for school and myself for work. He won't take responsibility himself as forgets.

is there any other time if day I can give it to him?

I take it as an adult and take it first thing in the morning but have breakfast much later. Could your DS take it at night last thing?

@pharmachameleon thank you - that's another issue he ends up eating toast an hour or so before bed so he can't take it after can he?

It's better absorbed if taken on an empty stomach, food will slow or reduce the amount absorbed. Can he keep the pills on his bedside, next to his alarm and a glass of water so it becomes habit to take it as soon as he wakes? Or take his breakfast with him to eat a little later?

If he ends up taking it closer to food and not absorbing the full amount he may need a bigger dose to achieve a therapeutic level. This isn't necessarily an issue so long as he's consistent.

@AltitudeCheck thank you - issue is if I do this he wont take it he doesn't think he needs it (his thyroid is abnormal but no symptoms we can see it shows up as he has regular blood tests for IBD so gets full bloods) - I have to physically give it to him

it's just so tricky it's been ok over half term as he wakes up slowly so less rushed

The instructions in the box say to take it 30 to 60 minutes before food. He is okay taking it as soon as he gets up and having breakfast at 7.30.

@StewardsEnquiry thats what he have been doing but it's me finding it hard he is on denial about his health issues (also has IBD) as he feels fine (thank god) so takes no responsibility to remeber so it's on me to be there as soon as he wakes to pop in his mouth when the mornings are crazy - I will just have to Carry on just not The best ..

I know he has to grow up a bit with his meds but for now I just been to ensure they are all taken
