Tonsillitis again already??

Outtatherepronto · 30/12/2023 01:10

DD5 was prescribed amoxicillin last Friday for tonsillitis and ear infection. My biggest concern was her tonsils as they were almost touching and doctor shared this view advising to take her to A&E should she start drooling.
the antibiotics kicked in quite quickly and she finished the course on Wednesday. She’s woken up screaming again tonight saying her throat hurts, temperature is back up and she has this horrid smell. I think it’s tonsillitis again, can it recur that quickly or has it just not cleared properly?

It can if the antibiotics haven't quite worked. We had recurrences in three months, a couple of those were where the first lot on antibiotics just wouldn't shift it

Lovethistimeofyear · 30/12/2023 01:14

From experience, it sounds like the course of antibiotics hasn’t cleared the infection.

Our DD always needs 10 days - some GP’s persist in giving 5 days, however, one told
us that it should be 10 days.

It can make them so poorly. Hope she is on
the mend soon.

Oh bless her, tonsillitis is awful

Obviously she needs to be seen again but something that might ease it in the meantime
Jelly - make it up in a mug and let it cool a little, then have her sip it
The sugar coats the throat and tonsils and it's quite soothing, plus it gets some fluid in her

Outtatherepronto · 30/12/2023 01:17

Thank you. I really feel for her, her tonsils are normally big but any sign of a cold or virus and she gets either tonsillitis or an ear infection (or both!).

Yes definitely needs more treatment. The jelly really works so try that and ice lolly is soothing too.

Tilllly · 30/12/2023 08:39

Did she get any sleep?

potterface29 · 30/12/2023 09:00

The exact same has happened to my daughter, with the same timelines. We're on the waitlist to have them out as she gets it all the time, antibiotics seven eight times a year. Virtual hugs 💗 hope she gets better soon

Outtatherepronto · 30/12/2023 09:51

She fell asleep just as I was filling in the 111 form for a callback at about 2:30 then slept until 7. She seems a bit brighter this morning but still has the smell and sounds odd.

Hopefully they call back soon

Santaisscouringindeedfornewjob · 30/12/2023 10:15

Dd had it 4 times in a few months.. GP said it wasn't all on her notes as trips to ooh don't go to your own GP... So make sure you dd's bouts are recorded if you have ideas about removal in the future...

Elderberrybabe · 31/12/2023 06:31

My DS finished his antibiotics on Wednesday. He had a 10 day course of penicillin. By Friday morning he had a fever, headache and throat pain. His fever is pretty low grade at the moment and there's nothing obvious with his throat (not red, no pus etc) But, he has absolutely no appetite and so much quieter than normal.

His tonsils are big aswell. He was referred to ENT last week so hopefully things will settle if they can be removed. In the meantime I'm watching him like a hawk. Hooe your DD feels better soon x

Tilllly · 31/12/2023 07:11

How is she @Outtatherepronto ?

watersoul · 31/12/2023 07:11

This used to happen to my daughter often. Unfortunately she would need a different course of antibiotics. Eventually she had them removed and it's been such a relief. I know it's difficult to get a referral but I would recommend pushing for one.

generalexpert · 31/12/2023 08:28

Push to get them removed, go private if you can.

I was similar as a child. Didn't have them out until I was 34. Should have done it a lot earlier.

My son was similar at an early age - I made sure he had his out young.

Outtatherepronto · 31/12/2023 08:52

@Tilllly thank you, she’s much brighter today. 111 wouldn’t do a call back just recommended a pharmacy which is pointless but when she got up her temperature was back to normal so I’m keeping an eye for now. She’s not complaining of pain until bedtime.

Shes been seen privately twice for adenoids and tonsils and they’re concerned that the infections would go to her chest instead.

Well that's an improvement - for now at least

This! Every time DD16 had a bout of tonsillitis we were told to record it at the doctors. End of last year we finally got a referral to ENT and DD16 is finally getting his tonsils out this Wednesday.

It's taken over 5 years to get to this stage so I feel your pain.

Outtatherepronto · 02/01/2024 11:08

After a reasonable couple of days, she woke up this morning complaining of pain in her throat. Doctor has seen her and has been really good, she’s noted it as a new case which takes her to 5 in 12 months and she has an ear infection. She said another case before March and she’ll refer to a consultant. She said it’s probably strep throat (as she also had scarlet fever in the last year) so she’s prescribed antibiotics for 2 weeks to try and eradicate the bacteria, the pharmacist wasn’t very happy about it but hopefully it helps!

@bleughgreen How old were yours when they had them removed? We constantly get told our DD has large tonsils, she's had approx 5 bouts of tonsilistis since August, but only recorded as 2. She's a very noisy sleeper, constantly sounds congested and a mouth breather, so wondered if I need to push a bit more, she's only 16 months so not expecting anything yet, but wondering what to expect going forwards

lorn195 · 04/01/2024 23:18

@annlee3817 I would definitely push it and I would make sure every bout is recorded on her medical notes.

We had the same thing with large tonsils with DS16 when he was 10. The doctor said he would grow out of them by adulthood. He's 17 in couple of weeks and they still were large until yesterday.

I know that your DD is still young but agree with @bleughgreen try and see a different consultant before they start school.
