Tonsillitis and vomiting

I've tried to google this but I'm getting nothing.

My 4yo DS woke up this morning and has been sick multiple times since. He smells ill, usually when I notice the smell it's tonsillitis which he's had 3-4 times. He says his throat hurts and it looking pretty red but I've not managed to have a very close look yet.

What I'm wondering though is can this be what's making him sick? He's been nowhere this weekend that he could have picked up a sickness bug from. Im sick phobic so have been feeling anxious about it going through the whole family.

Yes - tonsillitis can definitely make kids vomit. Always used to happen to DD1 when she had tonsillitis.

The only time my 6YO has ever been sick (excluding milky spit up as a newborn) was when she had strep throat/tonsillitis. Cleared up really quickly with antibiotics though! I’d see the doctor if I were you.

Yes, my son was vomiting a lot with tonsillitis.

Sorry for the description but the smell (from his throat) smelt like a dead animal in his bedroom, it was horrific.
The GP prescribed an antibiotic and something for vomiting (stemetil)?

That's reassuring, thank you! If he doesn't perk up later I'll call for an appointment. Poor thing hardly has anything in him so he's feeling very sad. Hopefully if he manages to eat something soon he'll have a bit more energy. The last couple of times he's got through it with calpol and ibruprofen and his temp isn't spiking at the moment so hopefully it'll be the case again this time 🤞

Oh that sounds horrible poor thing! DS mouth smells like nail varnish remover/pear drops. There's no hiding it when he's not well! I can tell as soon as I step into his room.

Definitely have him seen by a doctor.
I've had tonsillitis as a child and teen many times, I never vomited with it. However, when I had scarlet fever, I had both tonsillitis and nausea with vomiting. It's important to exclude it, as if he has it, he definitely needs antibiotics. Good luck!

Oh blimey! I'll get a call made to be safe. Thanks

Also sick phobic here so know how you feel! Just to reassure you mine have definitely vomited with tonsillitis and they're not vomiters in general. So it's probably just that, you'll be safe! Hope your LO feels better soon

I don't mean to scare you op but pear drop breath and vomiting can be a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis. I would get on the phone to 111 asap for an ooh docs appt.

thinkfast · 27/12/2023 18:25

Kids can vomit with a temperature OP. Does he have a fever?

runbackhome · 27/12/2023 19:02

He's right as rain now! Zooming around and talking quite happily. He still has the smell on his breath so I'll see in the morning how he is and make the call to the GP for advice. I can't see any other signs pointing to diabetes such as excess drinking etc and I only notice it on him when he has a throat or chest infection, never a normal cold etc, could it just be the infection?

He did once get checked over when he had a stomach bug and was struggling to breathe, he had the same smell then and the paramedics checked his sugar levels and said they were fine once he'd kept an ice pole down.

He's eaten very happily and kept everything else down so hopefully he's on the mend.

Glad to hear he's doing well now!
