Newborn cold/cough

Hi, so my partner has had a cold for 3 weeks and I think me and my 6 week old baby girl have now both caught it, it's hit me like ton of bricks I feel awful but obvs mine can be managed with meds I'll get over it, but I'm worried about my baby, she's acting normal she's not miserable or anything, shes breathing properly but she's super congested and sometimes has this dry cough. I keep googling symptoms of croup, rsv, covid and flu in babies just to make sure it doesn't turn out to be one of those but I think I'm scaring myself! I'm so paranoid about this, I'm not sleeping which isn't helpful as I'm poorly too, but Im feel the need to check she's breathing every so often!

Ive tried a warm bath, saline drops/spray, a booger sucker but they all seem to last about 10 minutes then she's stuffy again, if anyone has any tips it would be greatly appreciated or if anyone knows of any medicines she's allowed to take at 6 weeks old that would be great everything seems to be 2/3 months plus!

Thank you from an anxious first time mumma ❤️

It's horrible when they're poorly especially when it sounds like they're all sniffly but it helps to remember that they'll just breathe out of their mouth instead. It usually sounds worse than it is.

Things you can do at that age are:

  • raise the back legs of the cot so baby isn't flat on their back. I just used to stick a couple of similarly sized books under.
  • sit with baby in the bathroom and run the shower really hot so the steam helps decongest them.
  • one of those suction nose clearer things. I can't remember what it's called but it gently sucks the snot out.
  • karvol or something similar, not on baby if she's too young, but on a flannel or muslin and left in baby's cot.

@ohfook thank you for the suggestions, I just saw karvol decongestion room spray on Amazon I'll give that a go! She also has a next to me cot where the sides can raise, she is slightly tilted but maybe I'll tilt it a little bit more to see if that'll help and do you mean the electric nose suckers? I was thinking of trying one, I ordered the Freida baby nose sucker but that only works so well so maybe I'll order a better one 😊

My little girl had a cold too and the health visitor recommended using the saline spray before a feed to help it 'work through' properly.
You could try carrying her in a stretchy sling / carrier if you have one to keep her upright a bit.
Hope you both get well soon x

I feel for you @OnMyJourney it's horrible when they're newborn and have a cold because they can't have anything.

Haven't read replies but DD js 7 months old and has had so many colds and coughs the last 2 months.

  • Eucalyptus oil in boiling water underneath the head of the cot/moses basket (I order oil from Amazon, it's about £3 and works out so much cheaper than keep buying Vicks/olbas).
  • Humidifier from Amazon (think it was about £20 and has been a godsend) let me know if you'd like the link
  • olbas oil/vicks/eucalyptus on muslin and tied around cot bar or equivalent
  • run hot shower with door and windows closed, sit with baby on your lap for 10 minutes in the steam.

The dr told me that when they are so young, they'd rather see them and check them over and say "they're fine, it'll pass" than leave them and they might need help. DD needed antibiotics when she was a few months old, I thought she just had a cold that wasn't clearing up but she also had an ear and throat infection so get baby checked if you feel you need to x

Just seen your reply about the snot sucker, we've had two battery operated ones that were useless and we stick with the freida now, just make sure you've used saline drops to soften up any hard bits! X

My 2 month old has a cold too, I will try some of this suggestions, especially the shower. It's so stressful when they are sick. I hope you guys recover fast.
