Ear infection cause pain unless on side?

DD is 8 months and over the past month or more her sleep has deteriorated from 1 wake a night to multiple false starts and then two regular wakes. Coinciding with dropping a nap, solids, teething etc. However every night where she used to grumble then call me now she wakes and is quick to cry for me. I’ve found when it’s hard to get her down again she will often cry on her back but fall straight to sleep when rolled onto her side - I then wait till she’s sound asleep and put her on her back to follow safe sleep advice. She has also moved from tugging her ears a bit to sometime pushing her finger right in her ear canal and appearing to itch. NHS online says an ear infection would most likely pass in a few days plus she’s not in pain to the point of being horribly unhappy in the day. The biggest thing is how dramatically she goes from crying to calm and sleep when moved onto her side. Does anyone know what the reason for this could be? I can’t help but think there is some physical discomfort that improves on her side. Could it be an ear infection even after it’s been going on for weeks or any other ideas?

I don’t know about the sleeping on side vs. back thing but if she’s putting her finger in her ear and/or tugging on ear it would seem reasonable to get a health professional to look in her ear. The ear canal can be infected/irritated (swimmer’s ear) which can go on a while. More commonly young children get middle ear infections. Really good to get someone to check either way.
