Sudden Squint in a toddler

Any similar experiences?
Our very nearly 3yo has had a squint/lazy eye come on almost overnight in the one eye only.
It's there for 80% of the time all of a sudden. Paeds ophthalmology referral has been made.

An esotropia? (inwards one). They often do.

Bells3032 · 15/12/2023 20:16

Please make sure you see someone as soon as possible and get an mri. It's 99% something completely mild and treatable but it can also be a symptoms of something more sinister. Praying its the former for you and it probably will be so please don't panic

pharmacoco · 15/12/2023 20:18

Thanks - we were in a&e today, as per 111 advice. The emergency ophthalmology dept do not think it's sinister and have made the paeds ref. Appointment hopefully for next week.
Hoping it's not sinister and corrective

Have they ever had an eye test?
Could be an issue with sight e.g. long sight can cause a squint as the eyes struggle to focus

My dd has had glasses since she was 1½ years old. She had a squint and is long sighted.

dementedpixie · 15/12/2023 20:26

We felt her squint came on suddenly but looking at earlier photos it was likely present from an earlier age

pharmacoco · 15/12/2023 20:27

They did today (haven't previously no) and seemed to pass fine.
I did wonder about booking an optician

My DD has a squint, has been in glasses since about 13 months old. They massively help. I’m sure all will be fine. Our local eye hospital is excellent with young children and squints are very common.

Cocothepoodle · 15/12/2023 20:31

This happened to our daughter, overnight at about age 2. She wore glasses for a couple of years but that didn't help and she's just had the surgery for it aged 5.

dementedpixie · 15/12/2023 20:32

My dd was under hospital orthoptic care from 1½years until age 7/8ish and then we used a high street optician

dementedpixie · 15/12/2023 20:33

My dd also had a squint operation when she was 3ish but she still needed glasses for her long sight. Still has them now age 20

One of mine developed a sudden squint aged 3. Literally overnight eye went completely in. We paid to see a private ophthalmologist and he wasn’t worried . No mri done. It actually corrected itself to be on and off . He needed strong glasses to correct it even though vision normal .

Wexler1216 · 15/12/2023 20:36

My son had this at 4, like you it came on all of a sudden and I was quite alarmed. There was a special eye A&E near us (Nottingham) so I called 111 and was advised to take him there. They examined him and it turned out he just needed glasses, they called it an accommodative squint. His eyes straightened up straight away when he put his glasses on, and it still comes back when he takes them off for too long (he is 9 now).

Hopefully it’s something similar and easy to fix for your dc!

pharmacoco · 21/12/2023 07:26

Thanks for the replies. He's been seen, it's a definite squint and he will be wearing glasses, for a follow up in two months. Perhaps it seemed to 'appear' overnight but has been lurking for a while !

ah I’m glad you got seen quickly. My DD’s squint is much improved with her glasses. We use specsavers for hers as they replace the frames there and then when she breaks them. She doesn’t break as many now she’s 3, but we went through lots when she was younger!
