DD vomiting- nightmare

TequilaMockingburd · 12/12/2023 00:11

DD picked up what appeared to be a sickness bug back in October and was prescribed an anti emetic as the vomiting was prolonged over about 14 hours

This pattern was repeated a further twice in November but also diagnosed with an ear infection and given antibiotics.

3 weeks later here we are again - vomiting yesterday from the early hours and given an anti emetic again. Seemed brighter today and managed sone plain pasta and flat cola. Asleep at 9 but woke at 11 and vomited all todays food up in 3 separate spells within an hour.

We were back at the doc today and she prescribed Gaviscon to see if acid was the issue. She added that she was puzzled though.

I'm feeling so sad and worried for DD and talking myself out of calling 111 as it may be overkill but just wanted to know if anyone had anything similar happen or if you'd call out of hours if the sickness didn't stop tonight!

Eeek

@TequilaMockingburd I would go no food for 24 hours and just give them sips of water. how old is your child? sometimes going back to school after holidays the bugs just fly all round the school. when dc is rested start on some yoghurt.

TequilaMockingburd · 12/12/2023 00:22

Thanks a million. She's 4. Maybe too much too soon then, perhaps down to a heavy tummy after nothing at all yesterday.

Cyclical vomiting syndrome?
my dd has issues with vomiting. It’s terrible. I take her to urgent care if it’s more than 2 nights. Have you got any dioralyte? They’ll only give her an antiemetic and diarolyte in hospital. A drip if not able to drink

TequilaMockingburd · 12/12/2023 00:41

Yes!

That's what I think too. Frequency and almost exact same time for vomiting- on each occasion 5am to 7am ( except tonight ) and very well in between occurrences too. Then the nausea begins followed by the sickness a day or so later

It's torture and out of the blue

Flat cola is not good for upset stomachs due to the caffeine in it. Flat 7up isn't too bad as it's basically sugary water but dioralyte is the gold standard.

Sholkedabemus · 12/12/2023 01:01

My friend’s DD used to vomit frequently. She’s been diagnosed with Coeliacs and with a gluten free diet she’s completely fine.

TequilaMockingburd · 12/12/2023 01:11

I've literally just read that news on flat cola. Nightmare. She was last sick 20 mins ago and so I'll stick with sips of water until I can get rehydration drinks tomorrow..

If the sickness continues much more into the early hours I'll phone 111 . It's so distressing

I pray sleep takes over and she gets some rest now.

Might also be worth considering a good quality probiotic, once she’s over this bout?

coxesorangepippin · 12/12/2023 02:02

I have no suggestions really but can imagine how absolutely tiring this all is and hope you find a solution soon

Are you sure it's not an allergy??

TequilaMockingburd · 12/12/2023 02:17

Thank you so much for the post. It's been such a hard few weeks for her. Taking some comfort from how well she is in-between episodes but it's awful to see her so miserable.

It could be an allergy, or it could be that something she's eating is triggering the vomiting.... it's hard to say. I suspected the cyclical vomiting as the time of the episodes starting was so similar each time and the duration was similar each time.

It's truly awful though. That's for sure

I would request further in depth testing

Sholkedabemus · 12/12/2023 02:54

My friend’s child presented as fine between bouts of vomiting. I would definitely ask for a Coeliacs test.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 12/12/2023 03:32

Food intolerances can produce vomiting at a reliable interval after eating the offending food. It can be about 12 hours after eating it. Would the timing map to time she eats a meal?

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2023 04:22

Is the vomiting only in the morning? Any headaches, or vision problems?

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2023 04:23

Is it effortless vomiting? As in she's just sick with no retching etc.

TequilaMockingburd · 12/12/2023 07:17

Thanks so mock everyone,

The sickness is relatively effortless as ( from what I can see) it's not full at Mach contents, it's watery foam that progresses into bile after several episodes.
No headaches or vision issues , just building nausea then the vomiting.

I might start keeping a food diary and see if I can spot anything , she's a picky eater and so dinner tends to be the same things but she does snack!

On a plus she slept quite well from :00am until now with no further incidents and so last night appears to be an overloaded tummy that was irritated by cola.

Is there any stress or excitement in the mix? I started like this aged about 20, tended to be day 1 of a holiday. It progressed to migraine.

DS the same, certain weather and dehydration/stress.

If so When you recognise your symptoms it’s very manageable.

We both use cola- caffeine and sugar help us.

Relevance being both of us started with ‘vomiting bugs’ that were actually migraine. We twigged with DS because the rest of us never caught it!

I was just coming to say it could be an intolerance.
The same thing happens with my DD. She was being sick frequently in the mornings at the same time. Had headaches etc.
doctors gave us a massive scare and said they thought it was something awful.
But it wasn't it turned out she is gluten intolerant.
I took matters into my own hands and got a hair analysis done to find out what she was allergic to.
Since cutting gluten out the vomiting and headaches have stopped completely.
Hope your LO is alright OP.
As it's so distressing seeing them being ill especially frequently.

Just to thanks to everyone for your advice and support last night. There were no further vomiting spells through the night and she slept well. Lots brighter today and doesn't seem nauseous at all.

I've stuck to rehydration sachets and she's just munched a piece of dry toast. That's it for today and hopefully for a while.

Really appreciate the support. It's scary in the witching hours when the night ahead looms long!

toomanyleggings · 12/12/2023 21:31

It is scary! Why is it always at night as well?! Spent many nights with dd just holding her hair back feeling bloody helpless. Hope you get a break for a while
