DDH/hip displacia and pavlik harnesses

My son has been fitted last week with a pavlik harness. I'm just looking to see others who have experienced this for their children?

It is both hips and angles look to be 40 and 44/45.

What was your child angles and did the pavlik harness work? How long did they wear the pavlik? If it didn't work at what age did they have the op and was that successful?

😊 x

I can’t remember the angles now but both my children wore harness and my niece did too. My DD had a full dislocated hip and one was just shallow. They all made a full recovery. My DS does sport to a high level so I don’t think there are any issues long term.

Hi!
I can't remember the angles now I'm afraid, but my dd had slight hip displasia and had to wear the harness. She was fitted at 6 weeks and wore it for 8 weeks.
She's nearly 3 now and totally fine. I do try and make sure she doesn't "w sit" but no other effects.
Tips:
-my dd wore long sleeved body suits and leg warmers! Adult socks work as baby legwarmers!
-if you breastfeed then Google the "koala hold"

Thanks both. I'm sorted for clothes. Bigger size dungarees and footless rompers and ddh clothing.

I think his hips are shallow but not fully dislocated (from what I've picked up anyways).

My brother wore a brace (more like the rhino brace) in the 80s and he's fine. His son had ddh but it corrected itself by the time he had his ultrasound.

Glad to hear your babes are fine now 😊

We started at 47 I think and 54 maybe but dislocated at 10 weeks. Wore for 3 months and looking good now. Its scary at first but treatment is very successful. Good luck!

3 of my 4 were put into the pavlik harness. I also had dysplasia as a baby. My youngest is currently in hers, she is getting it off next week. She'll have been in it 14 weeks by then. It's such an adjustment at the beginning, the babies get so used to it in no time though and it doesn't seem to bother them at all 🥰 there is a great FB group called "hip dysplasia in babies" where you can find great tips and support. Best of luck x

Also it was successful on my precious two dcs, they are 4 + 2 and have been declared hip healthy. They check them again at 2 yrs to make sure of no regression. I think the pavlik is something like 90% successful so there is only a small chance of it not working. If unsuccessful they may put child in a rhino brace and failing that it may be surgery called open reduction.

Thanks both. I've joined that group also.

The doctor said today she will give it another fortnight and if no improvement she'll speak to the rvi about the operation and discuss options. (Our local trust can't give GA to such young babies so next "big" hospital is Newcastle / 2 hours away)

My youngest daughter had double hip dysplasia and a pavlik for eight weeks. Now 7 and all clear. I too had dysplasia of one hip in the 80s and was lucky to be an early recipient of a pavlik harness. No problems now either (other than no flexibility!). I remember how worrying it is, but it really is a very good treatment. Hope it all goes well x

I was breech born by cesarean and my mum was told to double nappy me as a baby to help my hips!

Yes I think they did used to say this but he's in the harness now. Probably not advised these days. My mam said it was said to her but my brother had a harness still and that was the 80s

My wee one was also born with bilateral hip dysplasia (both complete dislocations). She was put in a pavlik harness at 4 days old and wore it for 6 weeks. It was a brilliant success and she has never had any hip problems since (8 years old now). We were lucky she went into the harness so early as the consultant thinks this is what helped the harness to be so successful.
It was very daunting at first (she also had talipes which, for her, was a much much longer, still ongoing, process to sort), but we got the hang of it after a while.
A very good source of advice and information for us was www.stepsworldwide.org a charity for hip dysplasia, taliles and other leg/hip issues. They have some great pdf guides and also a helpline you can call for advice.
Good luck for your son!

Aw that's great news for your daughter. My sons is bilateral too but was 5 week when they put him into the harness. He also had positional talipes but seems to have corrected itself. Was your daughters caused by positioning? Just curious as they both seem to have the same two issues.
