Diarrhoea for 4 weeks

Bear with me as it's a long one...

Mid November my baby started with sickness and diarrhoea. The sickness was short lived but the diarrhoea continued. I contacted the GP and submitted a stool sample. It was clear. Around 2 weeks after the first episode of D&V, the consistency of her BM got better and she had approx 4 days of normal stool consistency, however she was still having at least 4/5 bowel movements a day which is excessive. However it was an improvement upon the 10+ bowel movements she was having previously. Her poos were foul smelling. After the few days of less frequent and more solid poops, it went back to the watery consistency once more with 3 days of vomiting and continued diarrhoea. I'm at a loss with what to do. She can't go to nursery like this and I have no idea what the trigger is. Could it possibly be milk? She's been fine with formula but transitioned to cows milk for night feeds around 2 months ago. She's had cows milk in her cereal and food for a long while so I'm sceptical. I just don't know what it could be or how to help. Her bottom is so sore even though I change her immediately. I feel quite helpless and haven't had any useful advice from the GP.

Hi Op, it could be an intolerance to dairy following the bug. My Dd was diagnosed with toddlers diarrhoea after a bug which caused her stool to be like pate. She had it for months with negative stool samples. I would cut out dairy and see if that helps the situation. If it does, you’ll need to gently reintroduce dairy very slowly

Thank you! It was really helpful to hear of your experience. Did you ever manage to reintroduce dairy? If so, how long did you wait before you did.

Secondary dairy intolerance is quite common after a bug.

Take out dairy completely for a few weeks get stools back to a good place then look up the milk ladder. You might not need to do it properly but on a good week try some foods from step 1 if that is ok the following week try foods from step 2 and so on to find where their tolerance is. If they aren't ok take out dairy for 3-6 months then do the milk ladder properly. The 6 step IMAP ladder is often the initial ladder people use
