4 months old baby sticking out tongue a lot

Is this common behavior or we should be concerned? Whenever he is playing with us, looking at us, he opens mouth and sticks out tongue a lot, move it around, licking lips, etc.

It did not appear until 4 months, otherwise happy healthy baby, smiling a lot and met all milestones.

Could it be sign that teeth should come soon since he is also putting in mouth everything he sees around him?

Not a specialist but I think totally normal. Tongues are one of the first things babies get control
over (before limbs for example) so they play with them to see what they can do. My standard activity with small bevies is to stick my tongue in and out at them! They will usually stick their tongue out back and you can get a little ‘conversation’ going after a while!

I think it’s okay, he’s probably just realised he has a tongue and is exploring what he can do.

Shoving everything in their mouth is also a normal phase and not really related to teething. My DS put everything in his mouth and was very dribbly. He didn’t get his first tooth till 10 months.

When they get their first teeth, it’s usually the middle bottom two. You’ll be able to feel the gum getting harder and sharper as the tooth gets closer to the surface.

Babies also learn about the world through their mouths more than adults do, so as pp says, sticking stuff in their mouths is part of that. I still use my tongue to find the edge of the sellotape as it’s so much more sensitive than my fingertip!
