Unusual- child's pp's hurting

This is a bit of an odd one. My DD who is 5 sometimes says her private parts hurt at night and that they sting. I've thought has she got a water infection or is it eczema, looked at lots of different things but it's only at night and only when she's super tired and not letting herself go to sleep. I think it's more of an anxious thing or something she's putting on? Has anyone ever experienced similar?

I would guess either:

UTI
Worms
Vulvovaginitis

How's her hygiene?

gertygirl · 02/12/2023 22:46

@Grimmz I'm thinking I'll treat her for worms anyway. We've never had them before (not that I know of.) does it only irritate at night time? She does scratch down there in terms of hygiene

Scratching and discomfort/itching at night are classic signs of worms. So give her a dose of Ovex and see if that deals with it.

Something else that works for my DD who is really sensitive down there is making sure she gets a proper wash every day and avoiding perfumed products (eg bubble bath).

@Grimmz thank you, I'll go and get some tomorrow and hope that helps 🙏🏻

Is she good at wiping? If no, her bits may get irritated. Or if she over wipes, same thing different reason. Check bubble bath sensitivity also.

I'd see the GP

She's definitely not 'putting it on' op. That you'd even wonder is slightly disturbing. Please don't make her grow up with her Mum being quick to consider that, all her life. Especially not over something like this.

gertygirl · 03/12/2023 09:23

@BeyondMeasure I considered that because last night I walked into the living room and she was happily watching tv and then as soon as I walked in she said it's stinging but it went from zero to 100 if that makes sense so I wondered if it's to avoid going to bed because she always likes to stay up late with us at weekends.

That's exactly how legit discomfort can look. Children that age go to tummy ache or thirst or scared of the bogeyman, not something like this.

Can you imagine how it would be if you turned up to A&E and they automatically assumed you're 'putting it on'?

Personally I always err on the side of believing the child rather than not.

I have vivid memories of this happening to me when I was a child. Waking up and having intense burning on / around my vulva. God knows what it was and I'm sure I didn't get 'treated' as such, like going to GP. I just remember my mum being sympathetic and putting Vaseline(?) on my vulva which from what I remember eased things. Absolutely real! Try the Vaseline but GP if things don't improve for a UTI etc. Hope she's okay!

gertygirl · 03/12/2023 10:32

@missally that's what we've done the last few times and it seems to ease it a bit. I've also given her some puriton which she takes for eczema.

@missally I might get her to put the Vaseline on every night for a week as a preventative to see if that helps
