Surgery with covid?

My DS is due to have his adenoids removed next week - we have waited sooooo long for this date (literally 2 years). Annual leave booked, everything set.
But last week his sister tested + for covid, now I have, he has sniffly nose and says his food tastes different today but is negative so far.
Going by how I feel I imagine he’ll test positive by Wednesday next week, is there any chance they will still go ahead with op?

and if not, do we go back on waiting list for a new date?☹️

So sorry but I would think it was likely that he will be positive on Wednesday and if not there's no way they will operate with those symptoms. I understand, ds4 was on the waiting list for a bone graft for a year, we got a date but he had an ear infection so they wouldn't do it. He went back on the list and it's been just over a year so far and nothing so far.

They used to cancel surgery if you had a cough/cold so I can't imagine that'll do it even if he doesn't test positive for Covid if he's unwell.

I thought so ☹️thank you x

Just a warning, and I really hope it's not the case, but guidance has been not to have general anaesthesia for 7 weeks after covid (unless of course it's life or death, emergency surgery). I learned this the hard way this time last year with my own surgery.

Everything crossed, it's not covid, or indeed, that guidance has changed.

Would you mind sharing your experience?
she’s negative (just tested again) but snuffly nose and sore throat, all my own symptoms so I do think she has it ☹️just testing negative.

I tested positive (for the first and so far only timeHmm) about 6 weeks before scheduled surgery under a general. A friend who works in the NHS flagged the guidance, so I called admissions who I was on first name terms with my this point, to see if it would change anything.

They and my surgeon actually advocated for me to go in as planned, as I was on hormones that I couldn't stay on indefinitely, but the anaesthetist wasn't comfortable going against the guidelines. I did the reading myself, and there was, at the time, research showing an increased risk of death in the post-op period, which I also didn't feel was worth it for a couple of weeks. Not to mention taking it into a hospital ward.

My new date was only about 4 weeks later (then cancelled x2 due to bed shortages, but that's another story). I had to test for covid for 3 days pre-op and then on the day itself at the hospital, which were nerve wracking. I had a slight sniffle, but nothing heavy colds and flus can also mean surgery needs to be delayed.

Thank you so much for explaining, that’s really helpful. I’ll call them in the morning to let them know as hopefully they can find someone else to take her spot.

That’s a fucker OP.

I’m fairly relaxed about Covid in general now but would still avoid if I could and test/stay away from the very vulnerable if I knew I had it. The surgery guidelines are still in place for a reason and I take them very seriously. Covid does some funky stuff when it comes to clotting and the blood and obviously you’d want to be as fit as possible for surgery and associated anaesthetics.

i hope you don’t have to wait to long to have the procedure rebooked.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/12/2023 18:21

Bugger. But unless the surgery is an emergency I’d go with the guidelines and assume that she most likely has Covid. I’m not sure they’d do it while she had any respiratory infection.

you - it is a fucker having waited so long for it dealing with back to back infections. Thought we’d finally got to the “fix” and to face it being postponed is just like a twist in the knife.
I actually really needed to hear these reasons as it strengthens my resolve to chin up and be glad I know it about it now so she’s not at risk. Thank you 💞
