DD gets 4 cold sores a month

Hi all,

My DD(5) seems to be really struggling with getting cold sores every month. She would heal from one then days later another one comes out. She caught the virus when she was 16 months old and since then they've been coming out once every 1-2 months but the last 6 months have been absolutely ridiculous.. gets them every week + impetigo to throw in. I feel so sorry for her. We do our best to treat with all sorts of cold sore creams / patches even prescribed fusidic acid for it. But nothing works. GP says there's nothing to do about it. But I honestly can't live like this. My heart breaks for her as she's such a gorgeous child and always with awful sores around her mouth.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Protopic. It’s amazing.

It’s probably not cold sores. It’s a virus.

acyclovir ABSOLUTELY works - my ex went from a nasty attack a couple of times a year, to basically never. He took it preventatively, and then had a boosted dose if he felt an attack coming on.

I hate to say it, but for him a trigger was chocolate - even a sprinkle on the top of a cappuccino.

My husband was the same until we discovered acylovir a few years ago, absolute game changer.

His trigger was often digestive biscuits or peanuts, sometimes even just drinking from a can 🤔

DS had this problem (and at same age 4/5). Initially we had to log each cold sore with the gp, when they finally saw how many he was gwtting they did a consultation with a paeds dermatologist who recommended a mixture for him to have from when the cold sore began to tingle. I think we only used the medication a few times but it boosted things enough so that hw rarely gets them now.

2 years on from this I can’t remember the last time he got one so I would highly recommend the gp pushing for dermatology intervention.

A red laser cat toy does exactly the same and they are 1.99 lol. Boots are a world famous rip off. The cat toy is non burning but its the light intensity that kills the virus. Great idea though. Just NEVER look at the beam.

Or a heat pen for mozzie bites.

@TakeMe2Insanity thank you for replying to this. Gives me hope! Our gp is currently on holiday but has asked for a consult from peds. I’m really hoping they help and don’t just say there’s nothing they can do! Is there anything you said or did that you think made a difference in them taking you seriously?

TakeMe2Insanity · 04/09/2025 06:48

@BeDeepPanda it was logging every single cold sore with the gp. Before that they were very dismissive. It was only after we’d logged quite a few that then they realised it was far too many.

my 4 year old is on aciclovir at the moment as she was getting them very often. hoping she will get less as her immune system matures 🤞

BeDeepPanda · 04/09/2025 20:36

@Mila202424 how old is your child? How long did it take for them to describe them medication?
